So you give Matthews superstar money and then tell Marner and Nylander to eat **** and sign deals that are way under market value for them. Great way to turn two young stars into our own version of Trouba (Who's handling of contracts makes me say no to him regardless of trade offer). Even if the Leafs convince them to take bridge deals, that will cause major damages to the long term cap situation of the team.
Tavares turned Matt Moulsen into a 40 goal scorer and a point a game player, he never came close to matching those totals without Tavares. Moulson is about 10% as talented as Marner or Nylander who will play the entire season on Tavares' wing. Lets say you bridge Marner and he scores 90 points playing with Tavares, now you are paying him over 10 million a season on a long term deal when the bridge deal is over. Instead of having Marner and Nylander signed at a team friendly rate for the entirety of their 20's (Which is the length of their prime years, See Corey Perry as exhibit A that a players prime doesn't extend into their 30's) they would have difficulty surrounding these stars with quality players since all depth guys will have to be on ELC's just to make the cap fit.
Sign Nylander, Marner and Matthews at the number it'll take to get them signed to 8 year deals.
