An $81M Salary Cap Would Do It

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2018
Published: Jul. 23, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The problem presented by 2019 is to keep most of the core talent while not exposing an inexperienced defense. As you can see, I'm keeping the top 10 forwards and the top defense pairing. You can substitute any one of our top 5 defense prospects (Borgman, Ozhiganov, Rosen, Lindgren or even Sandin) for Liljegren. Ditto Bracco or one of the Russians for a LW. And I'm sure that in 2019 there will be viable UFA candidates for all of those slots, too. (If you don't like the idea of retaining Connor Carrick, there's likely to be Robert Bertuzzo.)

I don't think you are getting either Marner or Nylander at those AAV for 8 years

I was thinking 10,7.5 and 6.5 the math all works out

Matthews number is good

Marner + Nylander, if they get 8 year deals the aav goes up because you are buying years of UFA
Nylander has 5 years to UFA
A 5 year deal would be 6.5, an 8 year deal would be 7.5-7.75
Same math with Marner he will have 5 years to ufa
A 5 year deal would be 7M and 8 year deal would 8.25-8.5

You may well see 5 year deals for either Marner or Nylander to keep the aav down
I think Matthews get the same deal Tavares got except with the 8th year

They may stagger Marner and Nylander so the don't come due again at the same time
Like Matthews 8 years, Marner 6-7 years, Nylander 5 years

If Marner waits to sign and plays out the year
It's conceivable he gets 80-90 pts if he gells with Tavares
Tavares made some players millionaires in NYI because suddenly a guy is getting 25 goals playing with JT

Then you could be looking at 9m for Marner

None of the numbers are good.
Term brings the aav down, not up.
Nylander is 4years to UFA, Marner/Matthews 5.

Pulling numbers out of a hat doesn't work in the cap era. The Leafs aren't about to trade players, making the team worse, to pay players what the player or the fans may think they're worth.

How about that D though. Everyone is complaining about how bad it is now... it's 40% worse.

I think all those numbers are discounts. Nylander and Marner are better and can earn more then Evander Kane who just got $7 million. Mathews could ask for the max but won’t, still probably gets closer to $12 million though.

The numbers are in the ballpark either 1M for one and 1M less for the other I say total of 25M should get all 3 kids in for 8 years

Look at Pasternak ( Bos ) and Ehlers ( Wpg)
They are better comparables than Kane
Who I think was an overpay

We'll see soon enough

Well you quoted my comment, this isn't my armchair team
I was just commenting on what I thought the contracts would look like

And I agree about the D
Of course I would consider trading Nylander for help on D if the right deal came along
And upgrade Gardiner too, great Offensively, horrid defensively
His 50 points are great but not when your constant turnovers turn into goals for the other team

Less than 300k in cap space, the cheapest and worst backend in the league, and you still go on about how they're going to get more?

Check out Corsica. You'll see that Gardiner is far better than you think and currently vastly superior to who you think is better.

When you're talking 7 to 8 years of term it does.

The whole object of the exercise was NOT to trade any of the top 10 forwards, i.e., to see what sort of defense could be constructed with a budget of $16M (assuming a cap of $81M) and assuming that I had to go with Rielly's $5M and Zaitsev's $4.5M.

"Worst backend in the league"?? Apparently, you haven't seen enough of Buffalo, Ottawa, Arizona or Vancouver.

I agree on both points but Ehlers and Pasternak were signed in 2017, Mathews and Marner will be two years out from that and Nylander will get a slight increase because of inflation. Even Mcdavids contract will be two years ago by the time Mathews signs, that all leads to increased salaries and new bars being set. Don’t know if any of these three would be big enough egos to enforce setting that bar and likely do get discounts.

But as you said, wait and see.

What’s how much players get paid have to do with their depth at a different position? Players get as much as they can, if they take less to win its a discount. The contracts above are what I would say are discounts, in my opinion.
