An $81M Salary Cap Would Do It

Created by: OldNYIfan

Description
The problem presented by 2019 is to keep most of the core talent while not exposing an inexperienced defense. As you can see, I'm keeping the top 10 forwards and the top defense pairing. You can substitute any one of our top 5 defense prospects (Borgman, Ozhiganov, Rosen, Lindgren or even Sandin) for Liljegren. Ditto Bracco or one of the Russians for a LW. And I'm sure that in 2019 there will be viable UFA candidates for all of those slots, too. (If you don't like the idea of retaining Connor Carrick, there's likely to be Robert Bertuzzo.)

I agree for this year that the back end will be weak and Reilly and Zaitsev will handle most of the big minutes. With Marlaeu contract done and the cap going up maybe an extra few million we can sign more than trade a stud or two solid Dman to round of the top 4

"Worst backend in the league"?? Apparently, you haven't seen enough of Buffalo, Ottawa, Arizona or Vancouver.

That wasn't a crack at your team. Rielly and Zaitsev were horrible together and can't yet defend to save their lives. They're currently decent #4's. Dermott could be better than them both, maybe, and the rest are currently in the 6-7 range.

That being said, I believe Carrick might surprise some this year and if Dermott makes the full time jump with no regression, they could both be good. I also believe they re-sign Gardiner, potentially before the rfa's.

What’s how much players get paid have to do with their depth at a different position? Players get as much as they can, if they take less to win its a discount. The contracts above are what I would say are discounts, in my opinion.

Thanks for the opinion(s)! I'm glad to have generated a study that received so much commentary.

Yes, that's the plan. My object was to upgrade the defense beyond having three or four rookies there, which is what I always see. Or trading Zaitsev, too, or Nylander.

I agree. These guys could all be filtered in. Here are some free-agent left defensemen that could be available in 2020 for $6M or less: Roman Josi, Jake Muzzin, Brenden Dillon, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Brandon Manning, plus the guy mentioned in my team (Kevin Connauton).

None of the numbers are good.
Term brings the aav down, not up.
Nylander is 4years to UFA, Marner/Matthews 5.

Larkin got 5 years 6.1 per
Same numbers as Nylander
Good comparable to Nylander and Larkin as a natural center
Everybody saying really good deal for Wings
Repliessss......
He got less because they did not get any UFA years
He is a UFA at the deals end
And Larkin is not playing with Matthews

Yes and no. Larkin led the wings in points, icetime for forwards and took the second most draws. They just signed him as their number one centre and for the first time in a while, it wasn't a terrible deal.

His deal doesn't help Nylander, it does however offer another realistic player for management to point at and say, "you're not making that much".
