Brown would be a top 6 winger in Vancouver, him and a 1st is way too much. Him and a 2nd I'd go for though, maybe upgrade to a first if they retain half the salary.

You are possibly right, but your going to have to entice Vancouver somehow so I see why he's trying to make it a definite yes. If you play the scenario out in your head, think of what Tanev will likely fetch around the league at the deadline. A 1st and good prospect isn't a stretch by any means. Also keep in mind that Toronto's first is likely to be a front of the line 2nd.

The problem with a Tanev trade is the following, Vancouver sees him as an allstar because he's the best defenceman they have. He is great don't get me wrong but he's not an allstar, he's a very good shut down defenceman. So Vancouver wants a home run return for a guy who isn't worth that return. The Leafs on the other hand don't need to make a move but could definitely make one to improve the team.

So in this case you have a team that should trade their best defenceman but won't get near the return you'd think you'll get trying to make a trade with a team that wants the player but at fair value because they don't have any pressure to make the move to begin with. It makes for one side asking way too much and the other offering not even close to what Vancouver wants.

I semi agree with you about Tanev's true value, Vancouver does have a higher opinion of him than maybe his stat line would suggest. That all being said, Toronto isn't going to be the one dictating his true value, it's the trade deadline market that will determine that. There's always someone willing to pay for the hope of a cup, and again...a 1st and good prospect doesn't sound irrational to me (think back on other deals at the deadline).

I am not suggesting Toronto will dictate the price, Vancouver will. I just don't think Benning has any idea what he's doing or what his cost should actually be. He's like a bag of cats, he seems to have no idea where he is going.

LMAO @ bag of cats!

I guess we shall see, because I am of the belief Tanov is a deadline name this season.

For sure he'll be discussed at the deadline and it'll be a top team who wants him but if he misses any time due to injury his stock will plummet.

I don't see why this is a overpay, Brown who is playing on your third line right now and a 1st round pick (which will be in the 20+ area), doesn't seem like that great of a price to pay for someone who you can slot into a top 4 role and would be a great compliment for Rielly on the top pair.

People always seem to bash Tanev in every trade scenario that comes up on this site but at the end of the day he would be a much needed improvement on the right side defence for the Leafs, and a trade for a late 1st round draft pick and a young winger (which the team has a surplus of) doesn't seem that crazy to me.

Its not bashing Tanev, I love the guy! Its about fair value, Brown is still young and has scored 21 goals in a season. Given a more offensive opportunity, its not a stretch to think he can score 30. That upside on its own is worth what Tanev has shown he's capable of over the past couple of seasons. (His injuries lower his value) I'd be okay with a Brown for Tanev deal and maybe if Vancouver really works hard, they can get a 3rd round pick as well. If they retain half Tanev's salary then TO could throw in a 2nd rounder. That'd be fair and I think both teams would walk away really happy. Brown would slot behind Boeser in the top 6 on the right side and give them some skill, speed and heart they are lacking and TO gets a true shutdown defender to play with Morgan Rielly at an insane salary. It'd be a win win.

I am in agreement. Again, not because of the straight up values, but because Tanev is going to fetch someone's first and a prospect/young roster player somewhere. That's just the nature of the deadline. Contention teams see shiney stuff and jump! The contender wins today, the rebuilder wins tomorrow.
