Panarin Rental

Created by: TheRage
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2018
Published: Jul. 25, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Panarin Rental, with the sole reason of winning the cup this year, and not trying to resign. My aim was also to bring some flexibility for bonuses to be paid, and avoid overages bleeding into the following season, when the cap crunch really happens.

Trades
1.
CBJ
  1. Hyman, Zach
  2. 2019 1st round pick (TOR)
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
There's no way that an extended rental in Panarin would exceed this kind of value. The Jackets would know that the Leafs wouldn't be able to re-sign him, which would limit their leverage in negotiations. Hyman would be a good dangling piece, as he has been productive, has first line experience, he's a Torts kind of player, and has a team friendly cap hit.
2.
TOR
  1. Hunt, Brad
  2. 2019 1st round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
He is a decent defender with good underlying numbers, low risk return.
VGK
  1. Gardiner, Jake
  2. Leivo, Josh
Additional Details:
Only trading Gardiner because I can't see how he will get what he deserves in a Leaf uniform. Leivo is included to provide scoring depth and ice time since Babcock won't.

So, maybe instead of trading to a team that only wants him as a rental, they turn to one of the other 29 teams in the league that might be interested in extending him instead of taking a crap offer?

Plenty of rentals for players not even as good as Panarin bring back more than this. Toronto would have to part with at least one quality prospect in addition.

Columbus would just trade him to a team that could afford to keep him. Don't know why they would take less. Not like Toronto would only want him.

Honestly if Panarin had a full no trade, and said he would only waive to go to Toronto, and told the jackets he was 100% not coming back, I still don't think they would take this offer.

Better to rent a defenceman. Leafs don't need to rent a winger.

Panarin, even as a rental, would be the one of the best rentals in recent history, and should command at least 2 1sts++

This is also a step backwards. If they are going for it they would keep Gardiner and try to get Panarin. Then let both walk. Like they did with JVR and Bozak.
