I don't think it makes sense for either team. The Blues aren't giving up their number 1 d-man in his prime, and the Leafs don't want to trade the 8 years of team control on Nylander for someone who might outprice them in two seasons.

Looks like a decent trade but I think it may be missing parts overall. STL might also want a defensive prospect and the TML may want forward prospect.

i do not think pietrangelo comes close to nylander. nylander is elite, but pietrangelo is also one of the best dmen in the league. parayko seems like a more realistic get

I don't think Nylander alone gets you even remotely close to Pietrangelo. Pietrangelo is a top 5 dman in the world, and Nylander is not even close to that. I don't even think I'd do Nylander for Parayko one for one, but that's a LOT closer in terms of value.

Nylander is finished his ELC, so the Leafs have four maybe five years of team control. Yea, I think that is why the Leafs would nix the two because of just two years of Pietrangelo control.

I think Pietrangelo is a much better player than Nylander, but Nylander is arguably more valuable. It's hard for two contenders to make a trade like that.

My thought about Nylander and the Leafs. Leafs will keep there young core....for this year. They will see how Carrick/Holl/Ozhignov do as the 3rd pairing RHD. If they need veteran help on defence in 2019/20, they might sign UFA Ellis for example and then trade Nylander for for cap reasons. This way you get assets in a trade, picks or cheap guys on ELC for Nylander and you get a UFA for free.
I can't see Gardiner or Hainsey returning in 2019/20, so the Leafs will be dependent on youngsters filling the void, or else sign a UFA or make a trade.
