Rangers making their intentions crystal clear. Hayes is not a part of their vision of the future. I think that's a mistake, but there you go. Should Fetch a nice price at the deadline though.

I agree. They should be able to garner a 1st round pick if he has a solid season. However, $5.125M for a #2 Center on a terrible team seems a little high. His offensive numbers don't support Hayes cap hit for a long-term deal; hence the 1 year contract. Last season he posted only 44 points in 76 games. Hayes has averaged only 43.5 points per season over the past 4 seasons, never eclipsing the 50 point mark. Zibanejad makes $5.35M and he's clearly the #1 Center. Either Andersson or Chytil will most likely take the #2 spot starting in 2019-20.

I know there was a lot of talk about trading him, this really hurts his trade value.

may make him attractive at the deadline though

.

If the Leafs can pick up Hayes at the deadline in their annual 2nd rounder for a 4th line center swap.....I'd support it for the first time in 3 trades (Boyle + Plekanec + Hayes).

Though he'll bring back a 1st unless he has a very poor offensive season....in which case I'll take a pass.

I don’t see why re-sign him for just a year. You can literally just flip him for picks if he does an extension.

because this is not an EA game.if the Rangers don't see him as long term part of the future, he wants to hit UFA if you bait him into a long term deal just to keep his trade value up you lose the trust of players agents.

It’s not ea logic to flip a guy in a sign and trade

these rarely (if ever) happen and as I said, it's not even slightly interesting to the player.

Hayes & his agent could have been demanding 6.5M if he was signing long term. We don't know how those negotiations went down, but I had read they weren't close on the money, so this is the compromise just to get him signed. Works for Hayes because he'll be a UFA after next season and someone will vastly overpay him then. He wasn't part of the Rangers future anyway, so he'll still be gone before the trade deadline. He should go for a late 1st, assuming his production stays on track.

He basically got the same deal as JT Miller, and he has better offensive numbers. I would think he would be a part of the team moving forward, but that is a pretty rich contract. I bet they could have got 4-5 years at a similar price, and everyone would be happy. The one year deal only means he will want like 6.5 or 7 next year, and then it can't work in NY or a lot of places.

If they were to extend him with the intention to flip him, it would severely limit the buyer's market on Hayes. With just one year, almost any contender would be willing to make a deadline move for him at 50% retained; there are a lot more options for the Rangers on the trade market. If he had 5-6 years attached to him with a $5-6 million AAV, certain teams may not be willing to include him as a part of their future and thus would not want to part with any assets for him.

Wow, it seems like 2018 is the year of signing bad contracts. This can be bad. Whoever has the best agent gets the most money. A 4th line player can get 4M now days. I strongly believe every role should have it's own market of salary. A 4th line player shouldn't make more than 2M, a 3rd line player shouldn't make more than 3.5M, scoring wingers 4M+, 2nd line Center no more than 6M, and goalies no more than 6M. Price at 10.5M is insanity. He's now setting the market for every great goalie. Could you imagine having Toews, Kane, and Crawford all at 10M? What would the rest of the team look like?

Good in the sense that a 1-year contract will let the Rangers flip Hayes at the deadline for picks and prospects. I don’t think - barring a surge in production this season - that he will merit a 1st rounder, a 3rd and a mid-level prospect perhaps? That said, each trade deadline has different valuations. Remember Martin Hanzal? The trend has been towards a buyer’s market at the deadline (somewhat confusing, as there are more teams competing now then ever) thus suppressing returns for rentals. I think teams are wising up to the limited value a rental brings and of the importance of keeping a strong system intact.

As a Rangers fan, I feel Hayes is a decent player, but definitely not a 5 mil+ per year guy. Therefore, it’s good they signed him for one year rather than putting themselves in straitjacket.

P.S. They should’ve given the Lightning Hayes rather than Miller in that trade. Any sane Rangers fan would rather have JT Miller.
