Great signing. Modest bump, will still be a RFA, and gives him 2 years to prove he should be part of the future.

I had predicted a 2y contract with a 1.3M Cap Hit so this was pretty spot on.

Flyers have over 10M in Cap Space with a full 23-Man roster. For a team that is primed to “take the next step”, I am almost surprised that they have been able to be so thrifty.

Obviously their major deficiency (in the present) is in net but with Kari Lehtonen being the best available UFA remaining I don’t see that being an upgrade worthy of signing. In 2 years tho Philly may have 2 of the best young goalies in the NHL and so I think they will bring them along slowly, rather than throw them in the fire.

They also are carrying only 2 L-shot D-Men at the moment so they could be in the market for a trade. My guess? Jake Gardiner from the Leafs could be available (depending on whether new Leafs GM opts to open the wallet and sign him). Even if the Leafs decide they can’t (or won’t) re-sign Gardiner, It’s possible they keep him and let him walk at end of the season. My money is on them recouping some assets. And doing so at the start of the season would let the Leafs assess organizational depth. Crazy maybe? But it’s a hunch. The Flyers certainly have more space come 2019 to re-sign Gardiner and they have assets that the Leafs could be interested in.

Perhaps they could sign one more UFA skater although they are at 48 contracts and counting and they likely would like to leave 1 spot for wiggle room should a trade arise at the deadline or prior.
