Seems like a great deal for Buffalo even if it ends up only being a rental for this season.

Well they got fleeced out of O’Reilly now Carolina gets the fleecing now. Now we know Sabres are contenders at least.

Great trade for Carolina. They trade an overpaid winger on the last year of his contract who wasn't going to resign anyway. They get a prospect who has over a point a game the last 2 years in the OHL. Then a 2nd 3rd and 6th.

I think Canes might be quite pleased with the trade. If Pu is near NHL ready....he could be a good one, I;m sure that's would the Canes scouts are counting on. And maybe not a first round pick but likely about 35th overall pick.

Even if he turns out to be a good NHL player next year, Skinner is a great player now.

I'm hoping there is a conditional pick in here that was not fully reported yet (based of him signing an ext.)

I thought Skinner would get way more but whatever. Pu and these picks don't seem like huge losses. Wondering what Patches will pick up?

Why are people surprised in these types of deals? No team gets "top-prospects" + first round picks + whatever for players like Jeff Skinner, Ryan O'Reilly, Phil Kessel, etc.

with three good forwards, average goaltending, and their best dman as a rookie? Idk if I'd say Skinner is going to push them into the playoffs. We'll see though. This looks more like setting up for the future rather than a "contend/win-now" move. They probably hope to get a 26-year-old winger locked up before he goes to market and they have to compete with the rest of the league for his services.

We have seen these type of trades before. Now Skinner has the Sabres by the balls. In order to justify the trade, the Sabres will overpay on a extension. I think it's bad hockey deal for the Sabres but maybe they needed show their fans "hope" for this season. I know the Leafs went from last to a playoff in one year, I can't see the Sabres doing it this year even with Skinner (has he ever made the playoffs?) and Dahlin.

Is Pu expected to play in 2018-19? If not, why would Carolina do that? They seemed to be getting better, and now they gave up one of their top scorers.

GM - BOTs possibly GM MVP of the off-Season. We got Skinner for a depth prospect and a bag of magic beans. Proven vs prospect we'll have to see how that plays out but high risk. PU may only pan out to be a 2-4th line winger or Career AHL but I think he'll be in NHL for sure. Very solid, tough to lose him but that's the price.

Yep, Buffalo is in a bad position to sign him now with all they gave up to get him. Likely overpay, (Sabres are in a bad bargain position) but hope not. Worst case, if contract talks don't look good, trade at deadline may get some assets back. Likely a first rounder after lightning it up with #9 or Mitts.

The only Red Flag is after reading just a little research is that Canes don't like his defensive game, I hope that doesn't continue in Buffalo . Defense is so critical for this team to improve, having said that we also need to score. Overall Sabres win for today on this trade but won't know for 3-5 years on the prospects. Gotta be honest though, I think Carolina got fleeced.

Sabres are better now than they were yesterday. I think like the other poster there is a good chance to make the playoffs. (Not just Skinner but the whole off-Season)

At least there is hope again in Buffalo.

Summary: Sabres traded for a stud (1st or 2nd line) winger for a hot flaming bag of PU & a bag of magic beans (late picks) left on Carolina's doorstep. BOT's rang the doorbell and ran down the street laughing all the way........possibly to the playoffs.

Ok, this trade makes Buffalo much better. First of all, why Carolina traded Skinner ? They will not make the playoffs once again because of an awful trade. They seemed to be getting better, and now it's bad all over again in Carolina. Trading a 200 goal scorer for three round pick and a prospect. Not the worst trade you can do, but the best thing was to stay put. Watch him have 30 goals with Jack Eichel. At least, Botterill is trading for good linemates for Eichel and Middlestadt. Great redemption Buffalo !!!

Prior to this trade I had the Sabres moving out of the basement and more into an 11-13 team in the conf. If Skinner has a good year ( and it is his contract year )
Maybe an 8-9-10 team is possible. If Eichel is healthy all year, if he takes another step forward
If Dahlin is as good as projected and wins the Calder
Buff has 3 1st rounders next year
We're gonna be talking a lot more about Buffalo before too long
They are trending to be a playoff team in 1-3 years

All good comments seb and all true
Canes know him better than anyone, that says something ( although Waddell has made his share of bad deals )
He'll be asking for 7-8 m next year, assuming he follows up with a decent year as he is a ufa
And has had concussion issues
If he has a good year and resigns and a decent amount and his new contract is good value based on production ( Buff Wins the trade........for now )
And in 5 years we will decide again...... depending on the picks and Pu

Skinner must be determined to try the open market, otherwise you'd think they would have an extension in place prior to trading him. This is also likely the reason the return was less than Canes fans expected.

Pu fits in well with Carolina's current young guns like Svechnikov and Necas. They built their defense first, now they're compiling forward talent.
