So he is going to be UFA next summer, plus he cannot sign an extension before Jan 1st 2019... IMO this is looking really bad for Ottawa.

Let's keep in mind that :
- Karlsson's situation is not looking good.
- If Ceci gets a 1 year deal, he can go to arb next year then go UFA on July 2020.
- Duchene is UFA.
- Anderson wants out.
- And now Stone is UFA...

What a mess this has become.

Now he's a year away from UFA. Just like the Hayes and Nelson signings, the difference being that he's one of their top players.

If he wants 9M next year they'll have to give it to him. Really.

He wants out. Hence the one year deal to bring him to UFA status. Ottawa’s three best players are all pending UFAs. They already traded one of their best guys for pennies on the dollar. It’s amazing to think how this team went South so fast. They were in double overtime of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and all of a sudden this is what’s going on. It’s a damn shame

There's no way to know he wants out. Maybe he does, or maybe he just wants more money and they might be willing to give it to him next year. And it's unlikely that all 3 of Karlsson, Stone, and Duchene leave, but imagine if they do. Then their best player would be ... Bobby Ryan? squinty smile

Chabot maybe but yeah, this team is going down hill fast.

If the sens could have gotten a long term deal done at line 7.5-8 that would have been ideal. If he repeats the success he had last season without the injuries, he's going to get like 9million plus, and that's way more than that liver stealing jackass would ever be willing to do.

They're going to reset the entire team at the deadline, all in one go. Stone, Duchene, Dzingel, Pyatt, Paajarvi, Karlsson, Wideman - all gone for picks, prospects and young players under control.

Depends who they pick up in the deadline trades. I imagine the return for Karlsson will include someone better than Chabot or Ryan.

I think it's pretty clear that this is about three things
1. If you get that far in the playoffs you don't add by substraction but you just add (i mean roster players of course). I do think Duchene is better than Turris but the latter was their clear No. 1 center and you can't trade away your No. 1 center even if it's "just" a Kyle Turris and hope that brings you over the top.
2. Dorion is just not a good GM. I pointed it out with the departure of Turris and the latest "great" move was trading away Hoffman for a cap burden like Boedker. Doug Wilson (Sharks GM) kicked Dorions ass by getting almost market value for Hoffman and sending him back into the Atlantic Division (pretty hilarious if you're not supporting the Sens).
3. Eugene melnyk can't sit back and tries to control everything but - and that's the problem - he just doesn't have a clue about hockey.

That's why Karlsson (no explanation needed), Stone (makes it clear with that contract) and Duchene (doesn't want to be part of a rebuild in Colorado so he's not going to cheer for it in Ottawa) want out and i can absolutly understand them.

Why wait? They should get more in return for a full year of a UFA then just for the last few months of the season.

Most contending teams can't fit another $6.5 - 7.35M under their cap for the whole year. Because the cap hit is calculated daily, by the deadline those figures will have gone down to more like $2.2 - 2.5M, which is manageable for many more teams. Also, teams will know where they are in the standings, whereas right now fewer GM's are going to mortgage the future if they aren't certain they'll be in the race.

Yeah that makes sense, also forgot they don't even have their 1st round pick anymore so...... lose for Hughes isn't even an option.

Would have expected longer term, particularly for this Cap Hit. That said, it’s inconsequential (I wish $7M could be inconsequential for me, LOL) as the Sens will neither be a Cap team nor will they have to worry about this being good/bad as he is unlikely to have that major of a decline in 1 season.
What the Sens are doing is cleaning house. There will be an unprecedented sell off of their pending UFAs (and likely some other pieces as well). By April there could be just a handful of players remaining from their Conference Final team of just 14 months ago (seems impossible to imagine).

The lack of money on the books beyond 2019 could make the team easier to sell to a new ownership group, in Ottawa or elsewhere (I hope not as the NHL has deep roots in Ottawa dating back to the 1910’s - the Senators, new and old, have been in the League for over a third of it’s entire history & it would be a shame to lose it).
The most unfortunate thing for the Sens is that their 1st round pick this year is in the hands of the Avelanche. No matter how many 1st rounders they get this year - and they’ll get at least 2 this year alone for Karlsson & Stone, respectively - none will be as high as their’s.
The question that remains, to me (other than the sale of the team) is what Dorion’s Expiry Date will be? Before he goes and bungled more trades and squanders their picks, I would expect management to make a move and bring in a fresh face to start building from as close to scratch as you ever will get. that it hasn’t happened so far signals to me that there may be a sale in the near future and that they are waiting for a new ownership group to install their own handpicked GM.
