Good deal for the Ducks. One of the best goalies in the league and just 25 years old

Wait. I thought you had to allocate 13% of your salary cap to goaltenders in order to win? I didn't know that you could sign Gibson for 40% less than Price's contract and still have a competing team. Huh. Weird theory. Wonder if other "teams" will try it out.

This deal will all come down to his health. If healthy, great deal. If not, 8 years is a long time

I don’t see how that’s a steal. It’s a fair deal especially when it’s a risk.

Last (3) Seasons :
3rd in SV%
2nd in dSV%
2nd in GSAA
5th in War/82

I guess he has to be even better than top-three in the league for this contract to be a steal.

To lock up a #1 team goalie at 6.4 million for 8 years when a guy is in his prime is very good. This is actually ideal when you think about it. However, while John Gibson is from my little hometown I do think he has more improvements to make but he comes from Pittsburgh so he has it in his blood. My view could be a bit tainted because I have witnessed my Penguins absolutely light him up several times but overall he is a very good goalie with great attributes, terrific pedigree and he's been very well coached. Gibson is a winner so I think this is a very good overall signing for the Anaheim Ducks because they have locked up their goalie of the future and they can now move onto other pressing issues such as what to do with Getzlaf and Perry and the like.

All I see is a guy that's:

- Better than Carey Price
- Six years younger than Carey Price
- Making 40% less than Carey Price
- For the same term as Carey Price
- Without demanding a full NMC like Carey Price.

Good for the Ducks !

They just proved that 1 stupid GM doesn't get to set market prices for the entire league.

Now it's time for Dubas to prove that Chiarelli got cucked by Draisaitl and McDavid.

I'm getting a bit weary of people saying $13,000,000 for Matthews...$9,000,000 for Marner...$8,000,000 for Nylander...I'd rather see all 3 of them traded than see that.

And the Ducks throw back jerseys are DOPE.

He's a good goalie, but signing a good or even a great goalie to 8 years is always an unnecessary risk. One bad groin injury and you have an albatross of a contract.

One of those signings where I could just as easily have said “yes”. And if you’re being honest with yourself, you would say the same.
The facts are that Gibson has established himself as easily in the Top 10 netminders in the League and, starting in 13 months, he will be paid like one. Who can argue with that? Given how much other metminders have gotten paid on extensions (cough cough) one could say this is a great deal.

But, Gibson has shown a tendency towards being injured and committing yourself to any player for 9 more years is a significant commitment in a Cap Era where these numbers don’t just disappear (LTIR helps with perrenially injured players but it doesn’t make it go away).

The fact remains that in 6 years - if Gibson maintains his level of play and can regularly play 60 games per reg season - then this will be a fantastic deal. It is equally as likely that he could miss significant parts of the first years of his new contract to injury (or even this year before it kicks in) and he is never the same player again. In which case this is an albatross that the franchise wears for a generation.

As contract length increases, so does risk. I would have been more comfortable with 4-5 years (so having him signed thru his age 30/31 season) rather than go all-in. I don’t think the difference in Cap Hit would have been significant (maybe 7-7.5M annually) but I would rather take that than risk those final years.

We’ll see how it plays out. Perhaps if it were another team I would feel different but Anaheim has repeatedly been burned by long-term deals to established stars (Perry, Kessler...) and so in that broader context I am more wary.

Great deal for the Ducks. Gibson is such a solid goaltender at such a young age.

No, Yzerman will use that as a comparable and say some bullshit about no income tax dropping the price.

Not sure how anyone could vote no on this. Sure, there's always that chance of injury, but this kind of salary for a solid number 1 goalie is pretty rare. Kings got lucky when they did the same for Quick, he still had some injuries here and there, but you don't see them complaining. Having that position locked up for what amounts to a steal for a number 1 goalie, can't really be upset about that.

Well, at least you get cap relief when in on IR. Don't think teams can worry about players getting injured.

Gibson, is great goalie but goalie's are never consistent at all so it will have to depend on his performance during the next nine seasons.

That's fine if you're a team who can pay money for players that don't play, like Leafs, Bruins or Rags. But paying a lot of money for players who don't play hurts small market teams a lot more, as they don't have the massive capital that bigger teams have.
