Pulling off a 'Burkie' at the 2019 Draft in Vancouver

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2019-20 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2018
Published: Aug. 5, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So once again the Canucks finish in the bottom 5 in the standings in 2018, but fail to win the draft lottery. Say they land at the 3rd overall pick. What would they need to add to that 3rd overall to trade up and secure the 1st pick, landing Jack Hughes in front of the home town fans?

Depending on which team wins the lottery, the return would vary quite a bit. Assuming Colorado is a playoff team again, they may want young players that could help them win now as well as the 3rd overall.

Nah. Hughes would be considered on a level above all that, not enough of an over payment yet for the Avs to move on from taking a generational level talent

I'm very curious what the cost of overpayment would be. The Canucks are pretty much guaranteed to be in the bottom 5 in the league again this year, so they'd be in range of being able to trade up if the lotto winner was willing.

Avs would want a young Impact player back to move away from Hughes. Similar situation would the Matthews draft...would you pass up on him to draft Puljujarvi or Pierre-Luc Dubois, and gaining a 2nd round pick, and 2 mid level prospects?

To be honest you would have to at least entertain the idea of Pettersson or Boeser to pry away the 1st overall pick from the Avs where they are in their needs and organizational long term plans. Hughes is a special player so quality over quantity to get that pick
