Why are you trading useful players WITH ADDITIONAL ASSETS for cap space that you don't use? Makes zero sense.

Teams where Sekera is definitely not a top-4 defenceman:
    - Nashville
    - Winnipeg
    - St. Louis
    - Minnesota
    - San Jose
    - Anaheim
    - Los Angeles
    - Arizona
    - Calgary
    - Edmonton
    - Carolina
    - New York R.
    - Columbus
    - Washington
    - Philadelphia
    - Tampa Bay
    - Boston
    - Florida

That's 18 teams off the top of my head, and you could argue that NJD, COL, BUF, and PIT have better options for their top-4.

The only teams you can make a case for "needing Sekera" in their top 4 would be Vancouver, Vegas, Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Ottawa, New York I., Chicago, and Dallas. DET, CHI, NYI, and TOR cannot afford him without substantial retention. I think its iffy for Dallas too.

The problem with Sekera's value is his age, injury, and cap hit. I just counted off 5 teams in the entire league that would probably be able to use him in their top 4 while being able to afford him. However, hes on a timer. How much mileage does he have left given that he blew his acl above the age of 30? There are 3 years left on that contract: he is very much a cap dump regarding what he brings to the Oilers after the 2019 draft.

The Oilers rushed him back from injury, doing the later years of his contract no favours. His underlying numbers suggest he was heavily sheltered towards the end of the season and he only managed a handful of primary assists in that window. I have no idea where you reach the conclusion of Sekera being a top-4 defenceman. The only thing dumb here was you blindly claiming Sekera as something he's not without any supporting evidence.

8 expiring contracts this year, and a handful of important ones the year after. Katz is currently cutting costs where he can to save actual dollars (hence the Gryba buyout). What "superstar" UFA wants to come to Edmonton until this team is worth its salt? Why does this team need to lock itself in perennial cap hell every offseason?

The only useful player that was traded away was Bear. Bouchard falling to the Oilers really hurts any chance he has of being anything more than a #7 guy that gets PP time. The picks moved out aren't going to be NHL players for at least 4 years, and no early round picks besides a 2021 2nd is moved out. Highly unlikely that more than 1 of those picks turns into a bonafide NHLer.

Lucic, Sekera, Russell and Aberg are all NHL players. You traded them along with high picks for low picks and replaced them with AHLers (Baptiste, Dauphin, Yamamoto, Raddysh). Unless you are using the newfound cap space for better players, this plan is terrible.
