Straight up, this is a pretty fair trade. Both sides will argue their guy is worth more. That's usually a good sign that you're close.

Why would Edmonton do this?

- Nugent-Hopkins can play center, Pacioretty cannot
- Nugent-Hopkins has proven to be an A+++ winger option for McDavid while we don't know if Pacioretty will have chemistry or not
- Pacioretty's contract expires at the end of the season, no guarantee he'd re-sign and no cost certainty on the next contract
- Nugent-Hopkins is under contract for three more years giving the Oilers the ability to forward plan more easily
- Pacioretty is 30 in November, Nugent-Hopkins plays the whole season as a 25-year-old

In short, this trade is a loss for Edmonton.

Comparing the two players without regard of contract, control and position is difficult because of the age difference. RNH turned 25 in the offseason while Patches will be 30 a month into the season - essentially 5 years older. If you compare Nuge's career numbers with Pacioretty's AT THE SAME AGE, it's not clear Patches is the better player.

RNH: 457, 119-194-313, 0.68 p/g, 11.5 SH%
MP: 246, 68-85-153, 0.62p/g, 9.5 SH%

If Nugent-Hopkins plays the next 5 years with McDavid, it's a near certainty that his career numbers at 30 will be better than Pacioretty's. Besides, we can expect Patches to decline, while Nuge is still in his prime years.

You forgot a stat:

MP -- 38 playoff games, 19 points (11 points as a 24-year-old and another 7 at 25)
RNH -- 13 playoff games, 4 points

Just sayin' ....

Playoff games played is indicates team prowess, it doesn't really reflect on the player much.

Sure it does. Both played front-line minutes, RNH on what was supposedly a more offensive team. But Max has averaged .5 points per game and RNH less than .3 ppg. That's called showing up to play.

RNH played 3C during the playoffs. Do you have any idea who his wingers were?

Edit: he also played a shutdown role against SJ and ANA's top offensive guys. Not an offensive role.

Sounds like you're making excuses. Presumably, if he were better than the front-line guys he was playing against, he'd have been able to get points. Look at the much-maligned Tomas Plekanec. He plays the shutdown roll to perfection and still managed 53 points in 94 playoff games. That includes 4 points in 5 games as a 23-year-old and 9 points in 12 games as a 24-year-old.

RNH, so far, is a good #2 C for the regular season. Projecting him beyond that is starting to look like wishful thinking for Oilers fans.

Well, I don't see anyone projecting him beyond that. He played 1C most of his career but that was due to necessity rather than ability. My point here was that a Nuge-Pacioretty straight trade is a loss for the Oilers.

Not a huge loss if the goal is to improve the offence and actually become a dominant playoff team.

I posted a bunch of reasons above, not sure if you've seen them. But, have you seen what Nuge does to McDavid? In their 13 games together last season, McDavid scored 27 points - that a 170 point pace. RNH scored 17 for a 107 point pace. They literally tore through the competition (28GF - 17GA with an AHL RW)... during that span (15 last games of the season) RNH missed two games with a minor injury and McDavid went scoreless with a -5 rating, so this isn't just RNH riding CMD's coattails. Pacioretty MIGHT have that effect on Connor, but the odds are very, very slim. If Max scores 100 next to Connor you can bet he'll price himself out of Edmonton's reach, while Nuge is still under contract for two more years (after this one). Plus Nuge is 25 and Max is 30, Prime v past-prime.

I like Pacioretty a LOT and would certainly want to see him on the Oilers roster (he'd be dynamite on Draisaitl's wing, IMO), but not at the cost of Nugent-Hopkins.

What is Montreal looking for in return? Prospects? Picks? Young NHL ready players? What position?

Is this a deadline deal? That would presume Montreal is out and Edmonton is in the race...

Hard to say. With Edmonton, it would likely have to be Bouchard or perhaps the 2019 first pick and McLeod. If the Habs are eating a bad contract in there (Lucic or Russell), the price might be a bit higher.
