They have to make a trade now ... they're over the cap, aren't they?

Yep, the cap space is -3,000,000

On the other hand Larkin is a very good 2C and 6 million is prefect for him. Has potential to be the next captain of the Wings.

Place Franzen on LTIR...and you can exceed salary cap by 10% during off season

Franzen will go on LTIR, which will give them some wiggle room.

surprised Larkin only got 5 years; for what appears to be their franchise 1C, he shoulda gotten at least 6.

He probably wanted shorter term for two reasons:

1. To cash in on a big contract by the end of this one.
2. If Detroit is a still a wreck he can pull a JT and jump ship to a contender.

Didn't realize the Wings were in cap hell... it's definitely not fun. Good signing, though.

I think it's a bad contract. They gain no team controlled years with this deal.

I think it was Larkin's idea to sign for five years. As a potential # 1 C he probably wants 7 m X 8 years. Wings wouldn't go for that 7m deal so Larkin signed for less but now is a UFA after five years.
This might be the new norm. We are used to either eight year contracts or two years bridge. A five year deal is best/worse scenario for both parties.
This might set the bar for Nylander for Leafs.

Nylander will get one of the following:

- $6,750,000 x 8
- $6,500,000 x 7
- $6,250,000 x 6
- $6,000,000 x 5 (100K off for tha boys)
- $5,750,000 x 4 (NOT happening)
- $5,500,000 x 3 (RFA expiry)
- $5,250,000 x 2 (RFA expiry)

That is all.

Great number, but if I was Holland I probably would have sought to buy up some more of his UFA years.

Good AAV, was hoping for at least 1 more year but this is a good contract.

I'm doubtful for Zetterberg playing this season so this is a very good signing for their 1C. If he finds chemistry with Zadina Detroit could surprise many.

While the salary cap excess (3.3M) this salary induces in the Wings balance sheet can be offset by Franzen’s LTIR, that leaves roughly $600k to complete their roster. The Wings are functionally AT the Cap with just 21 players + Franzen under contract at the NHL level. Will they carry just 12 forwards, 6 defencemen, 2 goalies & 1 Witkowski? If not then either:
1) trade is coming
2) someone else may be going on LTIR
3) someone is getting buried in the AHL (freeing up just over $1M if Cap Space but also taking away a body at the NHL level
4) the Wings will just play short-handed

I hope the pressure of this contract and the possible captaincy doesn’t crush this kid

"1 Witkowski" lololol I love it

They have ~$682K in cap space (after subtracting out Franzén), so that's enough for one of their $650K contracts (and Joe Hicketts, who's technically $635K against the cap). I say maybe they give Hicketts a shot at the NHL level.

I believe it's going to be option 2. Henrik Zetterberg has serious back issues and he hasn't been training. There's Filip Zadina who will likely take a spot on the roster and be an impact player.
