WHY IS $10,000,000 IN CAP SPACE CONSIDERED CAP TROUBLE?

Created by: drewjenks
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 13, 2018
Published: Aug. 14, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
.

The defense is no good....I'll agree....that's what the $10,000,000 in cap space is for.

How about signing Myers, Ellis or Stralman....then trading Carrick and some extra picks for a guy like Pesce or Parayko.

And all of a sudden....the defense looks amazing:

Rielly - Parayko
Dermott - Myers
Borgman - Holl
Rosen - Ozhiganov
Sandin - Liljegren
Gordeev - Durzi
Nielsen - Rasanen

FINAL NOTE: Matthews, Marner and Nylander will likely sign for less than what I have listed....probably around $2,000,000 less in total.

Lol. Nobody is doing those deals. They are all lopsided in Leafs favor. You clealy have no concept of player value. Your values are off Not to mention EDM is trying to trade a LD as they have to many don’t need another.

I love how you sign a couple of UFAs and turn around and trade them. Good luck signing another UFA ever, players frown upon that. And i especially love the “our defense is bad” yet you think you can trade them for 1st and 2nd rounders. Lol.

They aren’t trading for Pecsce or Paryko because those teams aren’t trading them and Leafs would not pay the price for them if they were.

You are in cap trouble because nylander, Matthews, marner are going to be tough to fit under the cap next year.

"You clealy have no concept of player value" - no that would be you.

And Edmonton is LOOKING HARD for a powerplay quarterback (Gardiner) and is looking to trade from it's stable of stay at home (zero-point production) defense to get one.

Thomas Tatar (who is older, less productive, objectively worse, and making twice as much as Zach Hyman) was traded for a 1st + 2nd + 3rd last year.

Yet....Hyman + a prospect for a 2nd + 3rd

"I love how you sign a couple of UFAs and turn around and trade them"

I didn't trade a single player that we signed this year....so to repeat myslelf....lol thanks for the laugh you silly Bruins fan.

Dylan Larkin signed for $6,100,000 x 5 years....LAST WEEK

"NYLANDER IS GETTING SOMETHING LIKE $8,000,000" - logical.

FYI about Dylan Larkin:

- Is Detroits 1st line C and best player
- Is considered Detroit's franchise player
- Is the consensus future captain in Detroit
- Is the same age and from the same draft as Nylander
- Had more points than Nylanders career high last season

Why is Nylander going to get $2,000,000 more than Larkin?

Larkin is a good player, but he's not a "franchise" player. Sure, he is the best player in Detroit (by a long shot), but if you're gong to tell me he deserved more than Logan Couture, Filip Forsberg, etc...? Okay, maybe you're right that Nylander doesn't get $8,000,000. I GUARANTEE you he get's more than Larkin, probably by a significant margin.

ALSO....LOOK INTO HOW THE SALARY CAP WORKS AT THE TRADE DEADLINE PLEASE.

If a team has 1 million in cap-space throughout the season....it increases by four times at the trade deadline because you only take on a portion of the cap hit.

So all of those teams will have cap space for the above rentals....even if they're tight against the cap.

And if they have no single season cap-dumps....Toronto can retain 50% of all of their traded players.

There will be no issues with salary.

Do you know how the cap works? The cap is a summation of the daily cap hits. So you take each player's salary and divide it by the days in the league season. Then you add up, each day, everyone that counts against the cap (on the NHL roster, injured, etc.). When you get to the trade deadline, you have what is leftover. So, for example, if you have Dylan Larkin on the NHL roster for every day of the league year, he counts for $6,100,000 at the deadline. If he isn't on the roster for, let's say 25 days, he cap hit = $6,100,000 * (# of days in league season - 25).

The cap doesn't just "go up by four times" at the trade deadline. The reason why teams have more cap space at the trade deadline is they are moving contracts around, reducing the amount of daily cap hit.

Also, you can only retain salary on THREE contracts, not "all of their traded players."

"You are asking to dump all kinds of problems on other teams"

The only player that could potentially be considered a problem is Zaitsev....because of his term.

Everyone else is either an expiring contract, a prospect on an ELC, or Zach Hyman (with a great contract).

So I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Jake Gardiner = salary dump.

Ron Hainsey = salary dump.

Nikita Zaitsev = salary dump.

Because they only have a year on their deal, the team acquiring these players don't have to count them against the cap? Okay, you picked teams that have cap space right now, but are they going to give up assets for "rentals" they will want to re-sign and your worst prospects. You act like these teams just blow money and just hand you draft picks...

And no....trading a 54 point d-man making 4 million dollars in the last year of his contract is NOT a "salary dump".

1. The Leafs don't need the cap space.
2. He's been out-performing his contract for years.
3. He's about to get a 50% raise.

I would keep him at his current price all day.

But unfortunately he's going to command 6 million plus as a UFA....the Leafs can't afford that....and someone else will pay it.

S*** players don't price themselves off your team.

So let me ask you this, if Jake Gardiner is such a "good player" then why are you trading him? If you can sign him for $6,075,000 (please check my math there), why are you trying to get rid of him? Isn't he good enough for your precious team at $6,075,000? Why run a player out of town that has been "out-performing his contract for years", huh? That doesn't make sense.

And, yes, that IS how the salary cap works. Read the CBA if you don't believe me. Or should I read it to you...

The Duchene deal....

Nashville was offering Ottawa the exact same package they gave Colorado for Turris (2nd round pick + two 2nd round prospects).

Instead....they rejected it and offered (Turris + 1st round pick + 1st round prospect + 3rd round pick to Colorado for Duchene.

So they effectively chose Duchene instead the following: 1st + 1st + 2nd + 2nd + 2nd + 3rd (mix of picks and recent prospects).

1. We can't afford to sign a 6 million plus defense-men at the moment.
2. Almost all of our good D and D prospects are offensive oriented and he'd be the most expensive next year (Rielly, Dermott, Liljegren, Sandin, Durzi, ect).
3. Cap wise - it makes a lot of sense to bring in a cheaper stay at home guy that cost 2 million so we don't have to trade any of the young core that also need raises.

Make sense?

Did I say a couple extra picks? (or did you just say that now?)

I said "some extra picks"....and if you'll notice....those extra picks include the following:

1st
2nd + 2nd + 2nd
3rd + 3rd + 3rd
4th
5th
6th
7th

And that would DEFINITELY get you Parayko

You just trolled your reading comprehension skills pretty hard.

Do you really think the Blues would except a rental and a late first which you can literally say it’s basically a second? Come on that doesn’t get you a PRIME player at a 4 YEAR DEAL. Who is a TOP LINE DEFENSIVE PAIRING in TORONTO. If Blues is making that deal it’s under there goddamn conditions. BLUES ARE ON THE HIGH GROUND. OPEN your eyes. There is no way Blues will accept a down grade old man and a late pick in each round for a guy who is guaranteed to do damage on D. There is just no way we aren’t rebuilding so go try to fleece someone else with that BS. Because this is a Fantasy FairyTale that you decide to create because you are so scared that if you don’t have a bettering D you won’t win a cup. Well then you shouldn’t have focused so much on Offense. If you aren’t willing to give a good Offensive Player then you won’t get a Good Defensive Player. No way in hell this helps the Blues which means they won’t do it. GIVE TO GET GIVE TO GET GIVE TO GET GIVE TO GET GIVE TO GET if you aren’t willing to give up one of your Top 4 don’t bother even calling the blues because they would call you an utter joke.

VIA HOCKEY DB

2017-Nov-05
- Turris traded from Ottawa Senators with Shane Bowers, Andrew Hammond, conditional round 1 pick in the 2018 draft and round 3 pick in the 2018 draft
- To Colorado Avalanche for Matt Duchene

2017-Nov-05
- Turris traded from Colorado Avalanche
- To Nashville Predators for Samuel Girard, Vladislav Kamenev and round 2 pick in the 2018 draft

-----------------------

Colorado got Turris + Bowers (1st) + 1st (2019) + 3rd (2018) + Hammond (goalie) for Matt Duchene

Then

Colorado got Girard (2nd) + Kamenev (2nd) + 2nd (2018) for Kyle Turris (both trades were announced at the same time).

In total, Colorado got everything below....and all they gave up was Matt Duchene:

1. Bowers (1st)
2. 2019 (1st)
3. Girard (2nd)
4. Kamenev (2nd)
5. 2018 (2nd)
6. 2018 (3rd)
7. Hammond

If Ottawa had just taken Nashville's original offer for Turris....they would have had everything above but no Duchene....instead they have Duchene but nothing above.

2017-Nov-05 Traded from Ottawa Senators with Shane Bowers, Andrew Hammond, conditional round 1 pick in the 2018 draft and round 3 pick in the 2018 draft to Colorado Avalanche for Matt Duchene
2017-Nov-05 Traded from Colorado Avalanche to Nashville Predators for Samuel Girard, Vladislav Kamenev and round 2 pick in the 2018 draft

5. 2018 (2nd)
6. 2018 (3rd)
7. Hammond

If Ottawa had just taken Nashville's original offer for Turris....they would have had everything above but no Duchene....instead they Duchene but nothing above.

Oh cool.....They got a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd.

DUDE YOU DID IT AGAIN.

I didn't say a rental and a late 1st did I? (I did not).

I said we have all our extra picks to offer and I listed them.

Are you saying that St. Louis will easily say no to the following offer for Parayko:

Carrick + 1st + 2nd + 2nd + 2nd + 3rd + 3rd + 3rd + 4th + 5th + 6th + 7th

Please tell me that's what you're saying....it would be HILARIOUS !!!!

That said....your reading comprehension is hilarious either way.
