MASSIVE 3-WAY TO REPLACE SEKERA

Created by: CD282
Team: 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 14, 2018
Published: Aug. 15, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Edmonton + Anton Stralman
Edmonton - Ethan Bear, 2019 3rd round pick

Tampa + Erik Karlsson, Marion Gaborik
Tampa - Ryan Callahan, Taylor Raddysh, Slatter Koekkoek, 2019 1st round pick (TBL)

Ottawa + Ryan Callahan, Taylor Raddysh, Slatter Koekkoek, Ethan Bear, 2019 1st round pick (TBL), 2019 3rd round pick (EDM)
Ottawa - Erik Karlsson, Marion Gaborik

Okay, so not exactly a traditional 3-way, but assets TB gained from Edmonton were flipped to Ottawa, so both deals are made simultaneously. I'm sure EDM and TBL fans will cry "overpay" and they're probably right, we're just having fun here while trying to be somewhat accurate in valuations. Overpay is how you get the players you want sometimes.

Cap for TBL will be tight next year, but what I'm thinking is this: Yzerman will convince EK to sign for $9.5M, so Girardi leaving will cover that. The Lightning will win the Cup and Gaborik will retire, his salary will cover Kucherov's raise. So you have about $77M cap hit and the limit will be around $82, so $5M to cover the rest of the roster needs.

Also: Karlsson v Hoffman 8 times a year will add yet another storyline to the intrastate rivalry with the Panthers. :)

I feel like Tampa isn't really giving much up. Ottawa gets.... a shitty contract. A decent prospect. A 25 y/o "prospect" who hasn't made much impact, a possible top 4 defensemen and a late first. For Erik Karlsson.

Curious.

They have to accept the highest bidder, and, between Karlsson's refusal to re-sign, Dorion's poor management of the trade (leaking faked offers doesn't lend itself towards serious negotiations), and Melnyk's refusal to have any large contracts, that's hard for them.

I think Callahan and Bobby Ryan would have to go to the Oilers, though, but I think the Lightning should move Coburn instead of Callahan.

So, something like this:

To EDM: Coburn, Ryan, Stralman, TBL 2020 2nd, TBL 2021 3rd
To OTT: Bear, EDM 2019 3rd, Dotchin, Raddysh, TBL 2021 1st
To TBL: Karlsson

Do other fan bases agree?

Because Edmonton has $15M in cap space just laying around... oh, wait! Nope, that ain't gonna work.

You’re right that Edmonton’s cap situation isn’t that great. So Edmonton shouldn’t be the third team involved. They’re looking for a team that does pretty much have $15m in cap space that they’ll use in exchange for draft picks and mid-level prospects. The fact that this team may not exist, so these cap moves are costly, but Melnyk and Dorion still think the team getting Karlsson should pay for that and still give up someone like Point, Sergachev, Heiskanen, or Glass is probably the reason nothing has happened.
