3 way deal... does it work? OTT TOR

Created by: TotheNorth
Team: 2018-19 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 15, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Like the Hoffman deal, OTT doesn't want to trade Karlsson within the division so they work out a deal where Winnipeg trades Trouba to TOR for Kapanen Nielsen and a 1st, which is then flipped to OTT + Dano and a WPG 2nd for Karlsson.

OTT comes out looking like winners as they get a decent package for the rental of Karlsson, WPG moves on from Trouba and goes all in to win this season with Karlsson. They'll attempt to re-sign him but likely won't be able to. It's a big risk but you're getting arguably the best D in the league for the year to add to one of the most potent offenses in the league.

TOR also gets the top pairing RHD at 24 years old they're looking for to compete for the next two years. They'll also use Matthews to try and convince Trouba to stay long term in TO.

Can it be Brown instead of Kapanen? Or maybe Johnsson?

Personally, I don't think Ottawa would bite at this package while helping Toronto get better. If Ottawa was getting Trouba + Lowry/Stanley + 1st, theyd rather get that tbh

It's not like the Ottawa would be in competition for the Leafs for the next two years (Trouba's stay with the Leafs) for a playoff spot. IMO Ottawa can get a better return elsewhere though
What's all these Neilsen trades?

Thanks for the info. He's strictly minor league. I wish him the best in his quest to be an NHLer, but just saying, let's not fool ourselves thinking he has value in an NHL trade.

He's a good prospect how does he not have value?? Only reason he's not here is because of how stacked in LHD depth the Leafs have. Maybe not a top 4 guy but he's got potential to be a top 6 D.

He was benched on many Marlies playoff games. Just on the Marlies he has been passed by Rosen, Borgman, Liljegren and Sandin and Durzi are eligible to be Marlies. Add vets Marincin and LaVorde, and newbie Lindgren, where is there spot for him? After last year I just don't think he's real NHL prospect.

He was only benched cause of Dermott. When Dermott wasn't there he played and played well.
Lilegren, Lindgren, LoVerde all RHD
Marincin, Borgman, Rosen are LHD that CAN play right side which btw at least 1 will be on the Leafs
Sandin is going to Sweden, you sure Durzi is Marlies eligible?
Either way there is a spot for Nielsen

I don't understand how Toronto gives up the better assets and gets the weaker player? For WPG to only give up a 2nd, Trouba and Dano for Karlsson is outrageous. TOR giving up Kapanen and a 1st would be a bit of an overpayment for one year of Trouba, but if he was to come with an extension, TOR could throw in a 3rd or 4th and I think that's fair value

It's actually 1 year @ 5.5M then 1 year of RFA with arb rights so 2 years control of Trouba. Gives them the ability to try and re-sign him after jan 1st for 1.5 years.

Ok so with this in mind, WPG is still fleecing this deal, with TOR giving up way more and getting the weaker player. I just don't see how that happens? Why would TOR not just give up the same pieces and get a year of Karlsson, and then try the same thing you're suggesting they do with Trouba?

So depends on what theory you prescribe to. Toronto gets a 24 year old RHD instead of a 28 year old Karlsson whos more likely to decline in an 8 year deal than Trouba. The other factor is with Tavares, Matthews, Marner all making big money deals, adding Karlsson at the rumored 10-12M might not be as feasible as a 6.5-8M Trouba. Also OTT likely WILL NOT trade in the division. Use the Hoffman deal as reference where SJS seemingly got a better return for Hoffman than OTT did because they refused to trade him within the division (or were told they couldn't).
