Opening Night

Team: 2018-19 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2018
Published: Aug. 16, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Luca Sbisa seems like such an obvious fit for Dallas, which needs an experienced LD. What am I missing?

Looking forward, it looks to me like the only way to retain Seguin, Janmark, Smith, Lindell and Honka (plus Dickinson, Hansson and Hintz) is either to let Spezza walk or else not re-sign Methot and Sbisa.

You're missing Miro Heiskanen....which makes the signing of Sbisa pretty un-needed. Defense should look like:

Lindell-Klingberg
Methot-Johns
Heiskanen-Honka
Polak

Heiskanen will be a top-4 (potentially top pair) defenseman by December, but he'll start the season on the 3rd pair, just to get his legs under him.

Send Gurianov back down, and bring up Dickinson and your forward group looks accurate.

And looking forward, that's exactly what Dallas is going to do. Methot and Spezza are both gone after the year is over. Dallas has too many young pieces, to re-sign to aging veterans at the end of their careers.

Thanks! The reason I signed Sbisa was that I heard that Dallas was likely to give Heiskanen another year in the AHL.

Heiskanen is currently one of the best players in the world not playing in the NHL. He was playing against grown men in Liiga last year, and was the best defenseman in the league. He isn't going to need an AHL stint, and Dallas is going to start him in the NHL. Every Stars beat writer has said as much. It would take a historically bad training camp to keep him off the NHL lineup come opening night.

Wow! Sounds like a great competition brewing between Dahlin, Heiskanen and Ozhiganov (the dark horse) and maybe Bouchard for rookie defenseman of the year. Looking forward to an interesting year and my southern California teams' annual first-round exit.
