Opening Night 2019 - $82M Cap

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2018
Published: Aug. 18, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Most of the constructions I have seen for Toronto 2019-2020 either trade Nylander, Kapanen or Brown for defensive help or else have a defense with three or more inexperienced defenders. Under this projection, however, if the Arizona trade is made before training camp starts in 2018, Toronto will go into next season with all 6 d-men having played together for a full year (assuming Ozhiganov is a success) and the top 10 forwards intact. The $6.25M available from Marleau's retirement plus the cap raise in 2020 should handily cover the increased cost of re-signing Brown, Grundstrom, Dermott and Connauton after next season.

Bonus points for putting Ozhiganov in the top pair. - 1 star for the connauton trade and signing Rosen. It has to be one or the other. Rosen didn’t come over here to play for the Marlies. Not a big fan of resigning carrick but I will assume for the purposes of your agm that liljegren isn’t ready.Good contract extensions. I’m thinking 10-10.5 for Matthews and 6.5-6.75 for nylander and think Marner is dead on at 7.5. Not a huge fan of your forward lines but I’m also not sure if you arranged them. All in all, pretty good.

That's pretty close. At forward, I think the Leafs move on from Leivo....so maybe it's player like Tishamov or Marchment or maybe an inexpensive vet.
Goalies who can tell him if minor leaguers can perform in the NHL. But I'll say Sparks, who might even get the job this year
I think this year we know. Carrick isn't good enough. In 2019/20.......Reilly, Dermot, Borgman, Rosen. I'm not confident in Rosen, see maybe an inexpensive vet. Zaitsev, Ozhiganov, Liljegren.
As a Leaf optimist, hoping in 2020/21, Dmen Sandin and Durzi and NHL ready too.

Thanks for the support. As you know, I respect your opinion. I've got Ennis and Jooris as possible extra forwards, and there's still time this year to sign Nick Shore. Toronto has an excess of riches when it comes to goalie prospects. And there's still Holl and Lindgren at RD.

Thanks for both the positive support and the constructive criticism. My thinking on Liljegren and Sandin is that they will both come up in 2020, but I may be wrong about the former inasmuch as not everyone has faith in Carrick. It seems to me that Marleau is better suited to a semi-checking role 5-on-5 and pairs well with Kadri and Brown; Hyman played most of last year with Matthews, hence my forward line combos.

That's a bold prediction for two years down the road. Or did you fail to notice we're talking about 2020, not 2018?

I don't see how you can say Connauton and Rosen are an either-or dichotomy. Rosen has one year of AHL experience. Connauton has 3 years in the AHL, 4 full seasons in the NHL and a fifth injury-interrupted year. Rosen's purpose in "coming over here" is irrelevant to their disparity in experience and Connauton's proven resume (11 goals and 21 points for a crummy team and one of only 4 Coyotes plus on the year). In short, Rosen will be an excellent replacement for Connauton when the latter's contract is up, IF Toronto decides to let him walk.

Did you forget about his 4 years of pro hockey in Sweden? He was signed to try to win a spot if he doesn’t he goes back to Sweden. I don’t think he came here to play for the Marlies. He certainly didn’t come here to watch the leafs trade for and sign guys to fill his roll. If that’s the course we take it’s fine but doubt he signs on for anything.

Thanks! It's impossible for any trade suggested on AGM to occur in real life, so it will be interesting to see how Rosen fares in training camp WITHOUT competition from Connauton.

He has too much competition at the moment. Think this season we see him filling in for injuries and competing with that 4th spot on the left side. I give the advantage to Rosen there. He will have very limited time to prove himself between ahl and nhl this season. I think if he doesn’t pan out and you were able to get connauton for a package like a 2nd and a 3rd (maybe you send Rosen the other way) then why wouldn’t you. He’s proven cheap and really a bottom pair guy till our prospect ld’s move up.

Oh, I agree that he's a bottom-pair guy. But at what a price! That contract virtually assures being able to keep the top 10 plus Rielly, Zaitsev, Dermott and Andersen in 2019.
