Habs: Back to greatness!

Created by: RocketRichard
Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 19, 2018
Published: Aug. 19, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reconstruction is the word.

First things first. After a weak start, CH ownership pulls the plug (at long last) on Bergevin and replaces him with someone who has respect for players, appreciation for talent, and who cannot be swindled as easily as MB.
Second, weak start will convince new management that the future is in the next two years' draft, so they will try to maximize potential picks over those two years.
Third, from Dec to trade deadline, proceed to parlay veterans for (mostly) draft choices.
Fourth, starting next year, Julien will be moved to make room for a new coach more adapted to bringing up a young team.

These are good ideas, sort of.

If that PENS pick is not protected, the Habs should go for it. Chances are, PITT does fine, but a few injuries... who knows. It might be worth the gamble.

Until Shaw can play 40 games without getting hurt, he's untradeable .... period.

On Weber, you don't have to give up that pick. Instead, eat 50% of the cap (much more valuable to Toronto). The 1st should be useless, in that it will be between 27-31, most likely. Nylander is great. Take Woll (G) and Liljegren (D) and it's a great deal for both. Weber at $3.5M for 6 years with no trade restrictions for Nylander, Woll and Liljegren -- none of whom are part of the Leafs' immediate future.

For a lot of reasons, I wouldn't trade Price. But if you were to, Hanifin, Jankowski and a first might be OK. Chances are, you'd want to eat some cap and/or get a player who can help you immediately. Also, as an aside, who would you have in nets after moving Price? Perhaps you need to leave Woll with the Leafs and take Garret Sparks instead.

Agreed on Shaw, but he's a resilient dude.
I like your reasoning on Weber to TO.
I think the habs are deep enough when it comes to goaltending. Niemi can smooth Lindgren' s entry into a no. 1 role. And agreed on eating some of the cap.

Toronto fans will probably lose their **** if they'd see that trade. They don't think Weber as a much of a strengthening since he has suffered some injuries and his level has arguably dropped from where it was 2 years ago... And they tend to love Nylander and Liljegren.

Hawks giving up a 1st for Shaw not to mention taking on that salary? LOL that's funny. We have John Hayden...a young Shaw with more upside on ELC. Plus you aren't at the cap floor so none of this works.

Weber was dominant while playing with a broken foot. When he will be back he could easily be the difference between a cup and a early exit for the Leafs. If the fans don't get this, Babcock does. Weber is the last veteran I would want to get rid of, but you got to do what you've got to do. Not sure Habs' management would want to do this sort of favour to TO.

Weber trade is hysterical indeed. This is a young mans league and Weber while great is too old and broken for this core. In 2-4 years he will be a write off and this core will be ready to peak

Good trades but i think i would made some changes to those trades :

I would trade patch for a unprotected 1st to a team more likely to miss playoff in 2020 than the pens.

You would have to retain salary on weber and price trades, but good value in return.

I would aslo trade pleky and byron for 2nds at TDL, and maybe you can package petry and mccaron for another 1st.

Claude Julien won't go anywhere. I think he just signed a 5 years 5 $ last year.
