Where's Byron? He is one of the most valuable underrated assets that the Canadiens still have.

Byron has been absolutely fantastic for the Habs and his career got a complete renew when he came here. But, soon it's time to let him go to a contending team. We need the space for our young guys to make their way up

You're going to want to have Drouin playing on the wing rather than at C

If we need space for the young guys, why keep Patches?

Though I understand what you are saying here, MTL is better off trading him at the deadline. Just pray he finds his form at the start of the season.
His trade value is probably a 2nd round pick and a B level prospect right now....which is crazy as he has scored 30 goals 5 times before the age of 29...

I'm a huge believer in keeping Patches. The guy is a consistent 30+ goal scorer and he's been our main offence for years (on a team with no C and barely any scoring). The guy is only 29 and in 3-4 years when we're in a big Cup run, we're going to overpay for someone just like him at the deadline. Look at JVR, look at Marleau, look at Nash.. He's got a solid 3/4 more years at 30+ goals and then some younger kid takes his place as our 1LW while Patches goes down to 2LW and starts getting 20 goals. He's a vet, an incredible player and a threat for us. Why would we trade him? Ideally I would sign him for a 6 year $8mil contract and i'm happy with that.

We're not in a rebuild, we're in a retool. When you Have Weber and Price at above 30 on long term contracts, we need Patches on the team. On young guns will make their way up soon but we can't let those two players go to waste either.

The media and other fans make it seem like the Habs are dead. Last year was a bit of an anomaly but our roster is by no means bad. Yes there's holes and the defense needs work but if Vegas can pull a rabbit out of their A**, so can we

Thank you!!!!! Even if Price just returns to his "average" and Weber is healthy by Game 30, the whole chemistry of the team will be different. We forget Weber had 16 points in 26 games last year on a destroyed ankle. He has also had the knee damage that was just fixed since before he left Nashville. He played through it and was still #6 in Norris voting in the year before last.

By the end of last year, Alzner was back in form and comfortable. That will only get better with Luke Richardson running the D. Petry took great strides and Reilly, Mete and Juulsen are all promising kids under 25. Ouellet and the two Czechs also add a bit of mystery to the coming season.

Up front, Domi replaces Chucky, and the rest of the cast is growing up. JDLR improved last year, as did Hudon and Scherbak. Armia is an improvement on Carr. Lehkonen, assuming he's healthy coming out of training camp, will also add some needed offence.

As long as there's no crazy NTC, signing and keeping Pacioretty for the next 4-5 years makes sense, especially if none of the offers are worth taking.

Didn't read any of the comments so sorry if I'm repeating anything.

Maybe that's what it will take to keep Patches but that is definitely an overpayment especially considering the season he just had. A comparable for me is Radulov (one could even argue Radulov is the better player). Radulov signed 6.25M x 5 years at the same age patches next contract will kick in. With cap inflation the equivalent to Radulov's contract would be worth about $6.6M / year.

I would offer Max $6.7M (just for number 67) x 5 years. I really like Max and hope MTL can work out a deal with him, but $7.5M for 6 years is a mistake (he would be 36 in the last year of that deal). Its not the $7.5M cap hit that's the issue but the term.

Or

$7.5M x 4 years

Here's the only problem. Pacioretty this year was on route for 22 goals, 25 assists, 47 points. Byron played in all 82 games and had 20 goals, 15 assists, 35 points. Drouin was on route for 14 goals, 35 assists, 49 points. Lehkonen was on route for 15 goals, 11 assists, 26 points. Domi played in 82 games for the Coyotes (worse than Habs) and still had 9 goals, 36 assists, 45 points. Hudon was on route for 14 goals, 20 assists, 34 points. All of these LWs that I just listed are younger than Patches and have more potential for improvement next season. Two of them have to go. Byron is one of the most underrated NHLers so we would be stupid to let him go and wouldn't get back enough value by trading him so we have to keep Byron. Drouin was on route to putting up more points than Patches and has elite potential so we have to keep him. Lehkonen's stat production has been going up exponentially each season and has underrated upside so we have to keep him. Domi was on a worse team on route for putting up just 2 points less than Patches would've and he has potential very similar to Drouin's so we have to keep him. Hudon was on route for fewer points than Patches but he does have upside, he is the LW who is the one of the least underrated and has one of the lowest upsides of all of these LWs making him one of the two LWs who should go. In our best attempt to keep Patches, we would have to trade Hudon and move Drouin to center. This though would cause us to be a rebuilding team right up to the cap trying to resign Pacioretty, leaving us with very little money to sign Byron and the younger stars such as Scherbak, Lehkonen, Juulsen, Mete, and Lindgren to long-term or even bridge deals. Keeping our captain was my original hope, but after taking into considerations our teams status as a rebuilder, our cap situation if we did resign him, and our roster spot issues he has to go, and with him, the sooner the better.

I understand everything you're saying, and you're right, we have a surplus of LWs. The issue is that for most of them, we don't know their potential so it's hard to give one up unless we have something solid coming back (as part of a larger deal). In a perfect world Drouin is playing LW and not C but for next season they may opt for that. I could even see them trying him at RW like they did at Tampa. To be honest, I much rather see Drouin at RW than C if that's possible.

Lehkonen I think is a good gem for us, he's such a smart player. He just needs to find his stride and he'll be decent for us.

Hudon is one of those players that can play anywhere in the lineup. In fact, I would love to see him at C, a position he played a lot in Juniors. The guy put up 30 points last season and I don't even remember seeing him half the time. He's good and he's motivated.

Byron has been absolutely amazing for us but if we had to give one up with value, it would be him. Like you said, we need to give our young kids the opportunity and maybe trading Byron is the way to go

I suspect that's right, though the Kane deal might have skewed things a bit.

Somewhat, however kane is only 27 and he will only be 33 in the last year of his contract - SJ signed Kane for the rest of his prime years, Pacioretty will turn 31 when his next contract kicks in. I think Radulov is a better comparison due to the similarities in their age.
