Filling Holes (no pun intended)

Created by: Jded
Team: 2018-19 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 26, 2018
Published: Aug. 26, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the thought that Steel is NHL ready, starting him off at LW to smooth the NHL transition a bit and fill a void the Ducks have had for years.

EDIT: Spooner to fill the 3C spot left vacant by Kesler’s indefinite injury. Salary retained to remain cap compliant when Kesler returns. Can move to LW when Kesler gets healthy.

Only move left to make is to extend Silfverberg ASAP. If he’s playing on the top line With Gets and Raks he will be a point machine and command a much higher raise. Get him under contract now and deal with the tough cap situation next summer, you can’t lose a guy like Silf for no return.

Not a fan of giving up Jacob Larsson for Brandon Sutter.

Yeah I can 100% understand that. Just seems like one of the more expendable assets since he’ll be rolling up behind Fowler, Lindholm, and Pettersson. Who would you look to target for a 3C role?

How about for Spooner?

If Kesler isn’t playing then see if Steel can win it out. Otherwise give Kosilla a chance until you make a move. Maybe a rental like Filpulla. Someone who could be acquired for a minimal cost and won’t block Steel after next season.

Probably not. Can Spooner play center? If so and depending on how he does maybe.

I guess we just look at it a bit differently. I see the Ducks as having two holes without Kesler (top 9 C and top 6 LW), whereas it seems you only see one hole there. I’m hoping Steel can fill one of those, but it’ll take someone else to fill the other (I don’t see Kossila or Ritchie as top 6 worthy). When Kesler ultimately comes back, then if Steel was ready he can play the LW position and then the Ducks can deal someone out for a return, keep the extra depth, or let Spooner stay at LW if Steel wasn’t ready after all. I’m almost always more of a fan of getting a lasting contract than paying a little less for a contract that’ll be worth nothing at the end of the season. Just flip someone instead and keep the value. Ritchie or Cogs could likely be expendable by year end anyways
