I highly doubt that to be honest. My guess would be that

Matthews gets $11.5 x 8 years (he won't get exactly what McDavid did, but he'll be close. I also think he will only settle for more than Tavares)

Marner gets $9.5 x 8

Nylander gets $7.5 x 6

Give me a +/- of $0.5mil and I think i've nailed it. They're going to get a $2 mil difference in each of their contracts. Matthews and Marner are going to be the Toronto dynamic duo. Nylander is great but he's the most expendable of the three so the contract will probably reflect that

I still don't see the problem TBH....

1. No cap growth? .... Than why did Bettman already state in a press conference that he projects the cap to increase by at least $5,500,000?
2. Matthews at $12,500,000? .... he's McDavid good? .... and why demand $1,500,000 more than a guy who just took a discount to play with you (he'll match Tavares).
3. Nylander is about $800,000 over-paid for a 5 year contract .... he'll only get $7,000,000 if he signs for 7-8 years ($6,500,000 x 6 is more likely though).
4. Marner looks like he's getting paid for an 85-90 point season .... maybe he'll have one (a repeat of this years performance gets him around $7,000,000 x 7).

So with the needed subtractions ($5,500,000 + 1,500,000 + 500,000 + $1,000,000) the Leafs have $8,500,000 more in cap space.

Which gives them about $6,000,000 left to play with next year.

Maybe they use some of that to pay Gardiner more than $1,000,000 .... or maybe they just let him walk and save the money.

Either way .... Marleau's off the books at the end of the year .... and they'll be plenty of room to add for 2020-21.

LOL umm .... show me the comparable that gets Nylander $7,500,000 x 6 years .... cause I'm looking at Larkin and Ehlers they're saying $6,000,000 x 5-7 years.

And Nylander sure as heck hasn't performed anywhere near Pastrnak ..... who got $6,666,666 x 6 years.

ALSO .... Kucherov just signed for $9,500,000 x 8 .... after getting 100 POINTS .... so Marner needs a DAMN good season to be anywhere near that.

$100 million isn't cool.
$101 million is cool (8 x $12,500,125)

The Leafs aren't a second tier club, they are the biggest MFing hockey team in the world. Why would anyone think some other team would be ahead of them?

Besides the cap has increased, and Matthews just watched the team dig down deep for Marleau and Tavares -- the only 2 other players on the team who are guaranteed to never be traded during their contract.
This isn't about the cap hit, this is about signing Matthews for the max 8 years.

If Matthews wasn't ambitious and hungry, we wouldn't want him. If you want cheap, go trade for a second best player like Eichel

Wait .... is your argument that the Leafs are the largest franchise and therefore must play their players more .... even though there's a salary cap ???

I guess there's no point in having this convo.

He's past his peak, which was taking 3 years to score 20 goals as an offensive-first defenceman. He belongs to the Leafs of the past, the Leafs of today are all about being world-class baby and Gardiner is just ballast

The NHL is overflowing with 29 year old defencemen battling in camp on PTOs

Was Matthews drafted 1st overall or not? Is there anyone you would rather have for $101 million over 8 years?

There's two kinds of people in this world: those who would have settled for Stamkos, and those winners who would have gotten Tavares.

There's so many haters here getting distracted by the past and their crushes, that they can't even imagine the future that's already here. Let go of the past

Accept that Matthews is a premier player, and he will get his money while others make room. It will feel like a bargain at the end of his contract no matter how big it seems up front.

CHILL DUDE! It was just an opinion, and i'm not even a leafs fan (if that calms you down more).

Maybe Nylander get's something in the $6-$7 million range. Pastrnak and Ehlers signed their extension last year BEFORE the cap increase was confirmed. All 3 players you listed as comparable are indeed valid. Larkin's contract still baffles me cause I think the Wings really got a good deal there. All these player's can easily be in the $7-$7.5 range with the way things have been going recently.

Kucherov took a MAJOR cut to help Tampa. The guy could have easily got above $10.5-$11 mil

Hater? I like Matthews.

He's just not better than the guy who had back to back 100+ point seasons, back to back art-ross trophies, back to back ted-lindsay trophies, and a hart trophy.

And he won't be paid more than him.

Now stop.

Not for that reason, but Toronto's tax cost compared to Tampa's is nearly 1.5x as much. Kucherov would need to be around $11M per year in Toronto to take home as much as he does at $9.5M in Tampa.

Wheeler just got $8.25M, Stone $7.35M, JVR $7M, E.Kane $7M. Lets not even look that far away... Tavares $11M, Marleau $6.25M... That was easy.

Tavares will pay a lower tax rate than Kucherov over the next 7 years.

Which doesn't sound true but it is.

The Canada / USA tax treaty has a provision that lets him (and most players) claim US residency while playing on a Canadian team and pay US taxes in their chosen state.

All he has to is buy a home in Florida (or another state he wants to pay taxes through) and rent his home in Toronto by renewing leases that are less than 12 months.

This will give him the same tax treatment as Kucherov.

But there's also a provision specifically for bonuses paid to athletes - which allows him to put a certain percent of all his bonus payments into a tax deferred account.

He'll eventually have to pay taxes when he retires or changes his residency status, but they'll be tax rates in the country / state he chooses.

He'll also be allowed to set up an payment plan, similar to a retirement savings plan, to provide a steady annual income after retirement (with a much lower average tax rate).

This will give him better tax treatment than Kucherov.

I said comparables.

You just named 6 UFA's. Nylander is an RFA without arbitration rights.

Comparable's would be: Ehlers, Pastrnak, Larkin, Hertl, Miller, Horvat, Zibanejad, etc.

Check out how much those guys got and then compare their production to Nylanders.

And please learn the difference before acting smug.
