Send Marleau back at any cost?

Created by: tatatavares
Team: 2018-19 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 10, 2018
Published: Sep. 10, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Would San Jose fans take Marleau at 2x $5? (list price 3x $6.25)
--
Thornton is 1x $5 this season
$8+$5/2 =$6.5
--
If he signs another 1x $5, that brings him to $8+$5+5 /3 = $6
--
So Marleau's $6.25 is totally in line with Thornton's pay before any retained salary

Marleau is not moving. First of all he is a freak of nature and second of all he has NMC, basically meaning he wont move from Toronto until his contract ends and we are perfectly fine with it..

This is about the Sharks' perspective though. If Marleau's salary were seen as a problem in Toronto, the team could encourage him to leave and he might be happy to waive -- but it all depends on whether or not it's disruptive for the Sharks. A late pick + salary to keep Nylander/Kadri/Gardiner would be worth losing Marleau to the Leafs imho

From my perspective, it looks like the Sharks haven't filled the hole left by Marleau. Evander Kane turned out great, but Thornton needs a linemate

Let's just stop this nonsense about trading Marleau. "Encourage him to leave"? OK Marleau, Marleau agrees. Buy me out. Leafs still are on the hook for a 6.25m cap hit for the next two years. Then he signed a nice 3m with San Jose.
Nothing in for San Jose. They don't want his cap hit either. Isn't that the reason they didn't sign him to a three deal last summer?

You have to respect his NMC and with the way he’s been playing why would you want him too???

He’ll be a leaf for this season and next. If he’s moving anywhere it is to a team with cap space if he decides to retire after winning the cup this year lol. It will cost us some picks but I don’t even see that happening if he does win a cup... he’s the iron man!!!

Trading Marleau is just another way out, and I think Sharks fans wouldn't be opposed

If you're a Leafs fan that doesn't want to trade Marleau, do be aware that you're just pointing a loaded gun at another Leaf to make room for him.
I'm glad we got Tavares and I wouldn't change it, but people need to grow up and accept there is a price to pay.

We held on to JVR & Bozak for nothing, a few more mistakes like that and you get a complimentary membership to the Mike Milbury club in the basement of the NHL

Here is the list of RFAs that haven't signed yet

Nylander leading the list

Then Marner AND Matthews next season, before Marleau's contract is done. So be ready to trade Kadri and Gardiner, even without signing a UFA D like Doughty, just to maintain the core

You come up with that because it feels good, not because it's the most likely.
To get Nylander for less than $7 million, he'll get to become a UFA ASAP -- based on his production and the contracts those near his draft position have recently got.
Even then it's cutting it very close, like I think the league minimum for a veteran is $800,000 now where you have $725,000.
On top of it all, replacing Gardiner with Borgman whether he's earned an NHL spot or not isn't likely to improve the team.

The problem is salary among the forwards, and it has to be resolved at that level.

Why on earth would Nylander make 7? Comparable players have him at 6. Pasternak (a better player) makes 6.6. if Nylander is over 6.5 fire the gm

San Jose does not want him back at any cost and Marleau will get every dine from Toronto on that deal.

He has bigger chance winning cup in Toronto, so he wouldn't wave his NMC. If he retires in SJS, it will be similar to Nabokov's retirement imo.
Also I just don't see any team wanting his contract, with those interesting UFAs next summer (and SJS has Pavelski, Thornton, Meier, Donskoi and Labanc wanting new deals).
