No. I said "overpayment much" so no

You joined this August, two years after the trade. Sorry you don't get brownie points for your hindsight opinion.

Good point. I said that the Blues were going to win the cup in 2019, when they were at the bottom of the league. Can't say I'm wrong because not everything is online.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH

How does Wilson keep doing this?

How did Ottawa not get at least Merkley out of this?

Quoting: CSickmann
Winner? Loser? This is a no brainer.

What is the condition? If Melnyk leaves they get the picks and this clownshow can finally end?

That Sharks Blue Line now. Sweet Jesus!

Quoting: Chopper02
No Merkley, no Meier, no LeBanc. They got a 3rd line center, a college player who could choose not to sign there, and a few picks. Yeesh

Quoting: Rooney
Hard to say that Sharks aren't the CLEAR winners here haha.

Whoever voted fair deal has to be a delusional Sens fan.

Wow that is an atrocious deal for OTT

This is a franchise altering type trade. Dorion whiffed on it. He traded the best player the franchise has ever had, for what? I'm higher on Josh Norris than most are, but he probably maxes out as a 2C. Balcers is nice, but he's a complementary piece. Tierney and Demelo are just roster players that they don't need. They got a 2020 1st, when they still don't have a 2019 1st. Two more picks are nice, but the chances any of this becomes worth just 1 season of Erik Karlsson is nuts.

Dorion has whiffed on two huge trades for this franchise, and it's left them in a hell hole. He now has my distinction as the worst GM in the game right now. The worst roster in the game and no first round pick or elite prospects to show for it.

I'm sad.... legit sad... no excitement at all for the upcoming year...

Can't wait to see how Dorion handles trading Duchene and Stone lol. Feel bad for Sens fans though.

Looks a bit different now doesn't it?

Saying this trade is a bad one for SJ after the fact isnt fair.

Some pretty extraordinary circumstances happened for it to be what it is right now.

- No one expected the best dman of his generation to fall as hard as he had.
- No one expected SJ to go from perennial playoff team to bottom 5 team in one year. Hence no top pick protection.
- Not only did they lose a high draft pick but that pick won one of the lotteries to boot.
- As good as Norris has been so far, when trading for a superstar in Karlsson, Norris being the primary prospect coming back was underwhelming.

At the time, this was an underwhelming trade return for the guy ppl were saying was the best dman of his generation. Ott lucked into this massive haul. Good for them as they got the same thing to happen to them in the Duchene trade.

I really feel SJS should make a trade with Colorado and absolutely fleece them so that we can complete the circle of teams getting royally screwed by bad luck. tears of joy

I never said it was a bad trade for San Jose (even though it looks like it now). You're right about all this though. SJ extremely unfortunate. Sadly Joe Sakic is Colorado's gm so don't see that last one happening

Not sure why you quoted me. I still feel bad for Sens fans because 3yr later and they're still the worst team in the NHL. They've landed some nice picks and I think they have a good future... but their still 3-5 years from being contenders.

It's not Erik Karlsson's(who still is a positive WAR player though not the titan he used to be) fault that the team around him has exploded like the Hindenburg.

Looking back at this trade, this is how I believe most people were thinking when instantly reacting to this blockbuster back in September of 2018:

1. The conditions on the draft picks are too long and too wordy.

I didn't read them because there's no point.

Details don't matter.

2. If San Jose fleeced Ottawa with the Hoffman-Boedker trade, then San Jose fleeces Ottawa in any Erik Karlsson trade.

Details don't matter.

3. San Jose gets the Swedish version of Bobby Orr while Ottawa gets a pile of junk.

Details don't matter.

4. The Sharks will re-sign EK65 to a team-friendly contract, win multiple Stanley Cups and live happily ever after.

While the Senators will remain dead last in the league under the thumb of Eugene Melnyk in one big apocalyptic dumpster fire forever and ever.

Details don't matter.

5. The "Mike Hoffman clause" in the trade is nothing more than an embarrassment for Ottawa.

Details don't matter.

6. Doug Wilson is a world-class genius that never loses any trades.

Pierre Dorion looks like Kevin Malone from The Office while Eugene Melnyk looks like Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars.

Details don't matter.

This is the reality:

1. EK65 was a pending UFA and San Jose was only guaranteed to have him for 1 season.

He could have easily re-signed with a different team.

San Jose would look really awkward if they gave up all these pieces, only to have EK65 walk as a pending UFA.

2. The key piece for Ottawa was not the 3rd overall pick in 2020 that turned into Tim Stutzle.

Because we all believed in 2018 that San Jose would go to the final 4 and make it the 30th overall pick in 2020.

The key piece was Josh Norris.

A former 1st round pick, Norris was a blue-chip prospect and was excelling at the University of Michigan in 2018.

He had a bright future in 2018 and still does today.

3. With regards to the draft picks, Ottawa would still have done well in this trade in the worst-case scenario.

Even if the San Jose Sharks won the Stanley Cup in 2020 and gave Ottawa the 31st overall pick instead of the 3rd overall pick.

I genuinely believe that.

4. At a minimum, Ottawa was guaranteed in this trade to receive 2 roster players + 2 first round picks/prospects + 1 second round pick.

That's sort of what Colorado got for Matt Duchene.

The instant reaction was that Colorado fleeced Ottawa in November 2017.

But then, the instant reaction was that San Jose fleeced Ottawa in September 2018.

Even though Ottawa got about the same thing on Erik Karlsson that Colorado got on Matt Duchene.

It is not fair and it doesn't make any sense.

5. You know what the bigger loser is in this trade?

Much more than either San Jose or Ottawa?

Conventional Wisdom.

Groupthink.

6. Ottawa wins.

Details matter.
