My guess is this Karlsson trade is a 1 year go for it deal for Jumbo

Description
I doubt the Sharks can afford to keep Karlsson, Burns & Vlasic if Karlsson gets max money. He would have to be around $8m for it all to work. The Sharks don't have enough young guys to take jobs and have too many players to re-sign. Great trade though. Thoughts?

My sense is that based on the ask of Karlsson group (approx. $11 million aav on a max term deal), the Sharks management group wanted him to actually get out there and play alongside Brent Burns and this group and feel like apart of this team. Hopefully then, that number might come down, closer to Burns' AAV, who I think might be the closest comparable next to Subban's contract. If SJS can somehow extend Karlsson between $9-$10 million AAV on a max term deal, that'd be a huge win for this team. I really don't think this was a pure short term rental type deal.

Wouldn't Doughty be the closest comparable? Doughty got 11 mil AAV for 8 years.

Well, not according to SJS I am sure :P He might literally be the closest comparable, but I am sure SJS would argue that they have the two best defenseman in the league and so their deals should reflect that similarity. Similar thing happened with Kucherov signing after everyone was convinced he would be getting over $10 million AAV on any new deal he signed. Look at Seguin today, people seemed convinced he would get well over $10 million, but Seguin's contract reflects on his relationship with the team and their other best player, and his close friend, Jamie Benn.

Keep in mind Texas has no state income tax. His $9.85m would equal $10+ million in another market.

My logic reflects only on the team environment. They do not have income tax in Florida either so both Tampa and Dallas have players in good situations. My point is that if Karlsson actually got to play with Brent Burns and play with this team, maybe he would be willing to take a little less in order to maintain its success across a longer term then simply 1 season. It will remain to be seen, but there is no doubt in my mind, on the open market, Karlsson could get at least $11 million over a max deal, if not more.

I just read the 1st round pick goes to Ottawa if Karlsson ends up on an Eastern Conference roster. Could Doug Wilson be pulling a Hoffman 2.0?

But neither Dallas nor Tampa have state income tax. I think Karlsson being in SJ reinforces the Doughty comparison because both are in California. Also Doughty and Karlsson are the two best defensemen in the NHL imo

Clearly the income state tax argument doesn't work because John Tavares chose to sign with a team that plays in a place which does have income tax. In no particular order, the top-5 defenseman in the league at present are Victor Hedman, Drew Doughty, PK Subban, Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson. On the low end, you have Burns' contract, and on the high end, you have Doughty's. Karlsson will fit somewhere in between if he chooses to sign an extension with the Sharks. My point was only that if he enjoyed playing their, and was experience success with the team, he would make his contract work, as other top players have done with their teams. On the open market, I think Karlsson gets more than Doughty.
