this is a pretty solid deal.
The guy blocks a ton of shots, and he dishes out a lot of hits. The offensive production isn't the best, but that's not really his role. He does what he's asked to do. 153 blocked shots last year is helping out your goalie.
Morrissey and Nurse getting almost identical deals. This still does not help the cap hell Edmonton is in.
People seem to agree that the Oilers is in cap hell, as you put it, but what exactly make people say that? If you look at the roster not many seem to be getting a significant raise in near future.

The Oilers are fine as long as Sekera goes on and remains on the long term injured reserve. Once he comes back it’s tight as the roster currently stands. They will have about 2 million in space left when he returns depending on who gets sent down to the minors when he comes back
But seriously, what the heck was the hold up? 3.2 for 2 years? Great negotiating Nurse's agent...really showed your worth losing to Chia in a staring contest.

I wouldn't say "fine" just yet. If they have a bounce back year and are in or close to playoffs, then at least you can say they are getting their moneys worth. Another year of being a bottom feeder while sitting near the cap though...not fine. But yes, Sekera buried on the LTIR and maybe a trade or two (Lucic, Russell, Cagguila, Kassian), and the Oilers cap situation will be looking a little better. What they really need is too start consistently turning out players from their farm system so they can fill low salary roster spots, make big impacts, then trade them while they are still rfa's.

Lucic, Sekera, & Russell are making a combined $15.66M per season for the next 3 years. All 3 contracts will hinder EDM from being a consistent playoff team in the near term. Strome is also way overpaid for putting up basically 4th line numbers last season. Puljujarvi is set to become RFA after this season. If he has a big year playing on the 1st line w/ McDavid he could be costly.

They have $778,834 in cap space with one spot available on the roster - and that's BEFORE putting Sekera on LTIR. No room to move, but with the roster set cap isn't an issue.

He likely isn't coming back this year. They said 6-9 months, plus he's coming off another injury in the same leg.

Yes, ALL because of the overblown (even thought he's awesome) contract of McDavid. You CANNOT pay super stars beyond crazy money in a league that's managed through a salary cap system. You must be smarter. YES, he McDavid deserves the most on his team and probably in the league skill wise but the reason why Pittsburgh has won three Cups with Crosby is because Crosby is humble and SMART and knows that if he makes crazy money his teammates won't be as strong player wise. 8.7million is a beautiful salary for #87.
As for D. Nurse this is a prove it to me contract and let the proving begin.
Strome has the same boxcars as Boone Jenner last year who signed for $3.75M. His contract is market value.
All that says is that Boone Jenner is also overpaid. Riley Nash had a much better season last year and he signed for $2.75 AAV. Bjorkstrand also put up 40 points ;last season and he's at $2.5M AAV. There was no reason to overpay Strome. He's weak defensively and EDM could've gotten the same production from a young kid on an ELC. This is just another example of why they're in cap trouble and why they need to get rid of Chiarelli before any more long term damage is done.

McDavid's contract is a value at $15M. He scored 8.64 points per million last year. By comparison, Draisaitl put up 8.2 points per million and Lucic put up a pathetic 5.66 points per million. Also, McDavid's contract accounts for 16.67% of the cap while Crosby's cap hit % was 14.5 when he signed. Not such a big difference at all.
EDM's problems have to do w/ a lack of depth and poor management decisions. McDavid is the most talented player in the league right now: It's not his fault guys like Lucic, Strome, and RNH haven't lived up to their contracts. All three need big bounce back seasons if EDM is gonna have a chance this year. Talbot also needs to play like he did 2 seasons ago. Too many things have to go right for this team to make the playoffs in my opinion.

Riley Nash is a 29-year-old whose career average is 25 points per season. He had a career year last year but nobody realistically expects him to score 40+ annually. His most common linemates were Backes and Henien, no reasonable person would argue that he was the catalyst on that line. He signed for 3 x $2.75M.
Strome was 24 when he signed, his career average is 36 points per season. His 2 x $3.1 contract is perfectly reasonable.

When you foolishly and unnecessarily overpay Lucic, everything you do has to be called into question. Chiarelli tried to build a slow and tough team around the fastest player to ever put on skates. How many players on the EDM roster would you think could possibly be traded right now? There's no team in the league, other than maybe MTL, that would be foolish enough to trade for Strome, Lucic, Russell, or Sekera. Klefbom gets a pass for last season b/c he was hurt. But the other 4 guys are all cap liabilities.

Moving the goal posts. Sekera is injured and Strome is being paid fairly. The other two guys sure, but it's not fair to include Strome and Sekera in the conversation.
Really solid deal for the Oilers. Could honestly see this guy have the best season of his career so far this upcoming year.
Now if only the Leafs could hurry up and sign Nylander.
Now if only if the Leafs could hurry up and sign Nylander....maybe if could also read if only Nylander could hurry up and sign with the Leafs. You would think about their negotiations, every conceivable number has been put on the table for consideration. Both sides seem to be entrenched in their beliefs.
