You mispelled Alex Nylander wrongly.. William Nylander would get you Tuch and 1st alone..

Absolutely right. Not even the challenge of having to keep the league's best defense intact through the expansion draft two years down the road is enough to hurricane Rob Blake into this deal.

Why to any of this?

Trade one: Martinez is good but I wouldn't say he's a huge improvement over Zaitsev.

Trade two: Nylander is significantly better than Tuch and Gardiner can be moved for at least a 2nd rounder and a decent prospect (I am in favour of moving him, he's gone after the season anyways, get pieces that can help 3-5 years from now.)

Trade three: Kapanen's elite speed and pk ability are a perfect fit in TO, why trade him? This is a lateral move at best and I'd wager is a bad move because Kapanen has so much untapped potential. Anderson is just an okay depth guy.

Zaitsev is coming off a bad year. As a result, his trade value is low. You never trade someone while the pendulum is swinging . . . you wait until a baseline is more or less established. A lot of the misguided trades I see on CapFriendly are the result of West Coast "invisibility" -- the lack of tv exposure due to the time difference. Many people east of Chicago don't realize how good Forbort-Doughty-Muzzin-Martinez or Fowler-Manson-Lindholm-Montour are, even if they were the first- and third-ranked defenses last year.

You underestimate Martinez. Not only is he one of the few players (let alone defensemen) to have TWO Stanley-Cup-series-winning goals in the same playoff year, he's also an underrated defensive player. You're absolutely right on the other two proposed trades.

Anderson is not an okay depth guy. He his a 24 year old power forward with speed and skill who has almost 20 goals a season for the last 3 years. There is no way Columbus trades him for Kapanen who has done nothing in the nhl.

I can't see why any of these trades makes sense for Toronto. They're getting totally screwed by the Nylander trade and getting Anderson for Kapanen is nonsense - the guy hasn't even played top9 minutes, where he'll probably end up.

Plus, getting rid of a right-handed D and getting Martinez (Who really isn't much of an improvent IMO) is not making their D any better.)

Trading for Tuch - yeah, why not, the guy is a gritty powerforward who could fit with the Leafs, but not for Nylander and some 2. round picks.
