I would be more interested to know if there was a better offer made by an eastern conference team. The way the one first-round pick clause is set up makes me think there was and Ottawa didn't want San Jose flipping him for that offer.

Balcers is significantly more promising than Hintz.
Tierney is, at worst, equal to Shore if not better. Tierney played with Hansen, Boedker, Labanc, Meier, Donskoi. Shore played with Janmark, Spezza, Seguin, Benn, Faksa.
Honka would have been the only superior piece (although DeMelo outscored him despite Honka being touted as an offensive D, so actually l o l).
Norris can be added on top of that at the cost of the conditions.
