You’re the one that said Toronto was built to steamroll teams offensively. When Dallas acquired spezza they were trying to do the same thing. It failed miserably.
Teams win with a strong back end
Would anyone call Washington's defence last year deep and strong? Karlsson is their best player and he doesn't even play against the best the opposition has to offer, that is Niskanen's job. They were okay on the blue line at best. I don't see Toronto being as far away from that as most do and really, there is 1 stat that people cling to to smash TOs defence and that is they allow a lot of shots.
If you did any more digging into that, they allow a lot of shots form the outside, so its not as bad as the media makes it out to be.
As for the Dallas comparison again, Dallas had 1 line, and added Spezza who was already past his prime. TO added a 27 year old Tavares who is way better than a 30+ year old Spezza and already had Matthews and Kadri. TO has 3 lines that can be reasonably counted on to play against any other line in the league. (Not saying they are better than all the other lines in the league, just saying this. Matthews can play against anyone and we can expect to be successful, same with Tavares and Kadri has built a reputation as being a very effective shutdown guy. No he's not a Selke winner nor will he likely ever be, Matthews is the guy who is more likely to win that in TO and that is a stretch at this point).
Dallas could not say the same, they had an awesome 1st line with Seguin and Benn and a decent 2nd line with Spezza and then a weak bottom 6. TO has a sick top 6, what could be one of the best 3rd lines in the game and a 4th line that will have speed to burn and can score. The last team that had that kind of stacked power through all 4 lines was Pittsburgh. That's the point.
