Offer sheet Nylander

Created by: jimmyhay88

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 24, 2018
Published: Sep. 24, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Could they make this work, they seem to have lots of cap space this year and next year. They would still have Ottawa's 1st and 3rs picks this year.
I don't think the leafs could match this with Matthews and Marner needing raises and not to mention Jr's 11 mill cap hit

I guarantee the leafs would match that. If this happened, you'd better not let Rantanen become an RFA.

They don’t need him tbh. They’ll get a top 5 pick this year

I understand the appeal of the offer sheet, but they just don't make sense. At least not when you are talking about star level players like Nylander. Where offer sheets work, is after the Leafs sign their big guns. Let's say a guy like Johnsson or Kapanen have a decent year this season. One of them scores 20 goals and 40+ points. That player could be looking for a multi year deal worth 3+ a season and Toronto, frankly, can not afford that. That's where an offer sheet would not be matched and then costs only a 2nd round pick.

The Leafs' cap situation isn't exactly at a point where an offer sheet is necessarily doable. If they lose Nylander, assuming Dubas is somewhat competent, he'll use the extra space wisely to ensure that he can keep some veterans on defense to help the young prospects develop, not just offer sheet out of spite because of the loss of Nylander and risk taking on an even more expensive contract than they would have had they matched this.

That being said, you're probably right that the Leafs match this, and while part of me wants to see it done just to destroy the Leafs' cap situation, I don't think any responsible GM would take that kind of risk.

Not to say that Dundas would offer sheet Rantanen, but if COL successfully offer sheeted Nylander I wonder why another GM wouldn't try to offer sheet Rantanen (8 years X 9M). What if a VAN, DET or NYI did that?

I always find these comments a little funny. Teams can send offersheets all the want, the players has to sign him. So in Nylanders case he could sign one if he isnt happy with the Leafs offers. Leafs offer sheeting Rants....well he would have to want to sign one in Toronto bc the Avs would be low balling him or something, and at this point there is 0 evidence that would be the case as both sides have already talked extension getting a feel for what the frame work would be

I'm not sure the Leafs match. Those picks could be good. Plus the Leafs have the 6.5m in cap space they have allotted for Nylander. Next year the Avs could be cap tight if Rantanen has another great season.

You compensation if off as the total years are over 5... also I'd rather not have him especially at that price, guys a 20 goal scorer on a high offensive team, even his team doesnt want to pay him over 6 mill

I used the calculator on here to get the number real close to the $10148132 line as I could to make it work.

I'd pass on Nylander if I was Joe.
