A lhd who would have to fight to make our roster a ufa and some magic beans is not enough....

Give me a second and I will let you know what it would take.... if there were ever a chance that we would trade nylander.

The closest I could get to fair would be nylander and zaitsev for palmieri woods severson. Would need to be balanced with picks.

This is a tough trade to gauge.

At first glance it looks great for TO, they are trading the best player but they are getting a guy who will become their #1RHD, Bratt who looks like he's a talented young player and Johansen has been effective in the past.

However, the best player in the trade without a doubt is Nylander, and he's 22 so his entire prime is still ahead of him. I am not sure trading that potential for 2 guys who are 27 and soon to be leaving their prime is a good idea. TO has a long window and this effectively shortens it.

Think about it 3-4 years from now. Nylander will be coming off his best hockey of his career while 2 of the 3 pieces TO obtains will be on the road to decline as they move into their 30's.

Personally I'd rather have Nylander's prime than the tail end of these guys best years.

I think if you swapped Severson for Vatanen this is pretty fair.
I would imagine if Nylander would sign for 7x7M he would have signed already. You may be looking at 7.5+.

Vatanen is a top 4 RHD. Mojo is a top 6 winger and Jesper Bratt is one hell of a young player. Two picks on top of that

They have him listed as ld didn’t notice he was a righty. Still not really the trade leafs are looking for. If nylander goes out a top pair rhd comes in, the only way I could see it happening.

fair. I guess even if the value is good for the leafs, you still say no. Guess like Barrie, Dumba or Parayko would have to come back

Not dumba or Barrie. Leafs are looking for a shutdown guy. I would rather get spurgeon from Minnesota than dumba. Think it would be guy like pesce Manson montour tanev. Obviously guys like spurgeon and tanev would need to give something back.

Bratt is not magic beans. The kid is talented and had a great first half before running out of gas. He worked hard this summer to prevent that. And Vatanen would fight to make your roster??!!

Either the original trade was changed after your comment or you clearly undervalue any other team's players.

Even if he were a lefty he wouldn't have to fight to make the roster. He's better than any d-man you have other than Rielly.

Lol... no he would be battling for third pair. Reilly gardiner. He would probably win third pair and be the 2nd pair next year.... but do es that really help us to have a slight upgrade on the left 3rd pair to then have bratt to replace the following season? There are lots of fair trade value deals that just don’t fit... we could probably trade nylander marner and Andersen for mcdavid.... wouldn’t help our team though.

He would easily beat out Gardiner. And Bratt wouldn't cost much to resign as an RFA. True, the deal might not fit, but you're wayyyyy undervaluing Vatanen.

Gardiner is a forward that doesn't retrieve or retain the puck well. He's good when he possesses the puck, and sucks all the air out of the team when he doesn't.
Buy him an excellent babysitter who does the defending, and covering up his giveaways ... and he's a 2nd pairing

Gardiner is soft in his own end and dominates most other stats.

Statically last season he was our best defencemen. Reilly had a bigger share of top line matchups though.

No, I’m not. He’s good on offense, pretty bad on defense. Vatanen is the better all around player.

I 100% agree that Nylander is hands down the best player in the trade, but I just don't know how the leafs are going to make the cap room work in the coming years with having to resign Matthews and Marner next year and
still negotiating with Nylander this year. The Leafs could sign Nylander this year to a long term contract and just worry about the cap next off-season and go all in this year, but then the Leafs would be in a similar situation next year.
Either way Dubas has got his hands full. He may either be the most loved man in Toronto or most hated man depending on how this plays out.

This might be old thinking, and as a Devils fan, but I made the trade with Vatanen instead of Severson because of Severson's size. Due to the fact that the Devils already have Vatanen (5'10" 180lbs) Greene (5' 11"190lbs), Butcher (5' 10" 190lbs), and Ty Smith (5' 11" 175lbs), hopefully Smith will playing in the NHL soon, the Devils already have a undersized D-group and got pushed around at times last season. Personally I would rather add more onto trade with Vatanen then to lose Severson.

Also you a probably right about Nylander getting paid more, but I didn't put too much thought into that and just used whole even numbers.

It is not a perfect match for the Leafs but I thought it was decent fit/ value. If Nylander holds out into the season do you think the Leafs will trade him during the season or just sign him long term and deal with the cap next off-season?
