It is not a perfect match for the Leafs but I thought it was decent fit/ value. If Nylander holds out into the season do you think the Leafs will trade him during the season or just sign him long term and deal with the cap next off-season?

Every game he misses his cost goes down. Nylander will be losing 30k a day starting tomorrow. This is what Lewis gross does with his rfa’s. I would imagine that sometime soon nylander signs in the 6.5m x 6yrs. Leafs will not be trading him.

I actually think Toronto wins this trade

Vatanen is a top 4 RHD. Mojo is a top 6 winger and Jesper Bratt is one hell of a young player. Two picks on top of that

The best player in the trade is still Nylander, but thought it was a decent trade idea.
No matter what happens though Kyle Dubas is in a hell of position right now.

    Of course not.

I 100% agree that Nylander is hands down the best player in the trade, but I just don't know how the leafs are going to make the cap room work in the coming years with having to resign Matthews and Marner next year and
still negotiating with Nylander this year. The Leafs could sign Nylander this year to a long term contract and just worry about the cap next off-season and go all in this year, but then the Leafs would be in a similar situation next year.
Either way Dubas has got his hands full. He may either be the most loved man in Toronto or most hated man depending on how this plays out.

I am not worried, the guys who will feel the pinch are the 4th line players, they can be replaced easily, the other guys can't.

This might be old thinking, and as a Devils fan, but I made the trade with Vatanen instead of Severson because of Severson's size. Due to the fact that the Devils already have Vatanen (5'10" 180lbs) Greene (5' 11"190lbs), Butcher (5' 10" 190lbs), and Ty Smith (5' 11" 175lbs), hopefully Smith will playing in the NHL soon, the Devils already have a undersized D-group and got pushed around at times last season. Personally I would rather add more onto trade with Vatanen then to lose Severson.

Also you a probably right about Nylander getting paid more, but I didn't put too much thought into that and just used whole even numbers.

I forgot that Vatanen was RHD, to be honest, so I would take the original trade.
I would rather have Severson for the same reason you want to keep him, but also because he's younger and is locked in for longer.
Most people would argue that Vatanen is the better player, but I feel Severson is a better fit for the Leafs current needs.
I would even drop the 3rd if it made the deal work.

Of all the trades I see on this site, I must say that this (your original trade) is actually one of the best in terms of value for both teams - thank you.

Okay, my curiosity with this would be... why would New Jersey give up so much, when all they would NEED to do is offer sheet Nylander? If you throw $7.5M for 7 years at him, you lose a 2019 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. They aren't in a cap-crunch situation, so clearing out those salaries isn't important. Giving up your #1 D and 2 2nd line forwards, and 2 picks is a bit extreme for THE RIGHT to sign a player to be the highest paid player on your roster. If you want him, you offer sheet him and put Toronto in a situation to match it or not.
