Probably get more out of Keller as a winger. And you're saving money for the wrong years, unless you think that ARI would retain that much on OEL's 6-year extension (don't think it's even legal, let alone realistic).

For Matthews? I think the Coyotes would jump at the deal. I live in Phoenix and go to a lot of Coyotes games. OEL is not a great defender. He’s a better version of Jake Gardiner and Keller is a good not great smallish forward who is a poor man’s Mitch Marner. Matthews is a generational talent and would only be traded if they could get McDavid in return.

Matthews is the one player Arizona couldn't refuse. Kelller was 3rd in the Calder on a crap team. OEL is perhaps better than Karlsson, and imagine a cost of $6 million for his prime years.
This wasn't a trade proposal, but a thought experiment (because no GM has the guts to trade Matthews or mcdavid).
Don't underestimate how powerful Tavares is, or how much less time the Leafs would spend in their own end with OEL on the team.



Yeah, I forgot to add Willy's contract. ARI can retain 50% of up to 2 contracts at a time. It is a big ask for an offer they can't refuse. Not that it would happen, just asking if other people think the Leafs are a better franchise after.

The question wasn't whether the trade was fair, it was did it make the Leafs better as a team in the terms of playoff wins. The trade isn't happening, so it was more important for it to be easy to swallow.



Yeah, if the Leafs could get McDavid I would have zero problems blowing up the whole team and restarting the rebuild around him. He would move the needle for Arizona and maybe they could sell out some games.

Unless Dubas repeats by signing a UFA D, there is zero chance of the conference finals in the next 3 years due to a non-existent D corp and pipeline.

If the question is, "Does this trade make the Leafs better?" Its a resounding no. Unless you are trading Matthews for McDavid, the answer is no. Matthews is already one of the best players in the world, trading him for anyone outside of McDavid is a bad trade. It doesn't matter what the pieces coming back are.

Zero chance, this guy says. Have you watched any hockey this year? The Leafs could use a guy to replace Hainsey but they have been the better team in all but the first game. They are giving up goals yes but so is just about everyone. Just take a breath and stop panicking. Trading away our elite youth for defenceman leaving their prime isn't going to make the team better. Their stars entering their primes and getting better each year is where they will win the most games.

We will see how the leafs do, the only weakness on the D I think is a major issue right now is hansey. I think if anyone were to be moved for a D man it would be nylander but we have been drafting and developing really well. Dermott zaitsev and Reilly have looked great this year.
