I've suggested this here before, but I'll post it here since you've asked:

Toronto Maple Leafs
Spurgeon (half retention, salary comes out to $2,593,750)

Minnesota Wild
Kapanen
2019 2nd round pick
2020 3rd round pick (this pick is for the salary retention)

Now that Kapanen has been playing phenomenally, that 2020 pick might have to either be taken away or change to a depth player like Leivo.

I think Kappy is a more of an untouchable piece now but I like the idea. maybe you can get a 2nd 3rd and leivo tho I like that look for Toronto

I'd hard pass on Leivo and a 2nd and 3rd for Spurgeon. If we trade Spurgeon I'd hope a great young player is coming back and Leivo is not that guy.

Kapanen is worth more than Spurgeon with how he has been playing tho. so it would have to be Spurg+ for Kappy

Well apparently you need to trade a future Hart winner for a top 4 D... talk to Chiarelli, he'll help you out...

I have to disagree. The reason he's been playing well is since he's with Matthews. When he wasn't playing with him he didn't put up anywhere close to the numbers he is now. Spurgeon is a top pairing RD, if the return isn't Kapanen or Nylander I think the Wild hold onto him. He'll fetch a massive return at the deadline this year or next if we explore that down the road.

I would still think Nylander is the team's best trade chip, because as far as depth goes on the right side, he will also rank below Mitch Marner, who's the top RW on the team. With Kapanen suddenly becoming top-6 material, and with Nylander perhaps signing and coming back at some point (as opposed to trading him or having him sign beyond Dec 1), Kasperi would be the team's best shot and getting a defender, especially because his ELC deal will be up and I am not sure he'd be willing to take a Zach Hyman style post-ELC deal. Beyond that, it would be prospects, specifically some of their forward prospects. If Jeremy Bracco has a good year in the AHL, either he, or Connor Brown, as another resident RW, would also be expendable, but either would have to be included as part of a bigger deal to land a top-4 defenseman.

Kap has had a few good games. He is not a part of the un-tradable core. It is Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Reilly and right now Anderson.

We've seen continued improvement from Dermont, Z looks like he did 2 years ago and Oz has gotten better each game. If we trade anyone outside of the above, unless its a steal, we are trading for continued depth so that we can extend the contender status past the 8-10 year mark.

You can’t get quality without paying for it.

A top prospect, 1st needs to be in the mix. You could afford to give up Brown (hurts but true), Liligren, Dermott, or Sandin.

If its a playoff push and someone is in a sell off of a soon to be UFA - pick, prospect (and potentially salary balancer)
eg - 2nd, Rosen, and Hainsey for Ceci and 5th

If its a straight up getting better, more and you will likely overpay
eg - Spurgeon for a 1st, Dermott and another piece

I don’t see Leafs selling off too much - their plans have always looked like longer term thinking and building up each year, rather than costly moves. Plekanec was a moderated upgrade with likited costs, for example

So Nylander is not part of the core, even signed? Interesting. I would not consider Anderson part of this core.

You ppl are fishing in wrong pond....it should be ANA or NSH ( CAR is out , they can keep Faulk, also VAN can keep Tanev and his doctor bills ) cause those two will actually be in big cap crunch after this season and they are packed with D's ( maybe WPG also but they arent in Cap trouble )......so they will be forced to take what they will be able to afford and pay, mostly minor league players and pics for the future

Manson / Montour ( ANA ) or Ellis ( NSH ), so something like that comes to mind : https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/884345 ( three way with VAN included, so you dont lose Gardiner for nothing on 1st July )

I also think Kadri deserves to be No1 or No2 C in some other team, he was just "replaced" wit Tavares and likely Pacioretty type of trade can be pulled out for him where Tatar could result in some quality D, or as someone posted a trade Pesce <--> Kadri, 1st & 2nd : https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/172826

TVR one would also work fine, but thats more patching then upgrading

Kapanen is a bit overhyped atm, but if he gets us Spurgeon, i will yell hes Top 10 RWs in league every day

When he is playing, sure he's a core piece. I'm referring to being movable. We can't keep everyone, unless they give us discounts(which so far is not turning out). If someone has to go to stay cap compliant and competitive. Those 5 guys would not be moved. that leaves Willy as the odd man out.

A goalie as good as Anderson is always a core piece. Problem with goalies is they can be unpredictable. So right now he's playing good, so he's part of the core.

IMO
