unless dermott is absolutely garbage, he isn't accepting 2.2 million. He looks better than that to me.
I this Matthews gets more.
Marner might get more.
Kapanen definitely gets more.

that blue line looks really, really, really rough.

Valid comments. Its hard to project out 2 years and I didn't make any trades within those 2 years.
And I completely agree that Matthews, Marner, Nylander would be able to get more from many other teams. I projected a home town discount.

This was my thought process in this exercise:
-Matthews: is not at McDavid level (arguably 2nd best NHL player but not 1st) and with inflation you put him on par at $12.5 and he does $500k as home town discount = $12M
-Marner: probably close to $9M value since he hasn't hit 30 goals or surpassed 70 points yet... but maybe $9M is a hometown discount
-Nylander: seems like $8M is what he is looking for, so with $500k as home town discount = $7.5M
-Kapanen: the $2.5M was only a 2 year contract and expires after this 2020-2021 season. With his padded stats playing with the Leafs top 6, he is now free to sign a huge contract with any team. Leafs are not able to afford him so they lose him
-Dermott: not sold on him which is why I gave him a 3 year contract. If he commands more, then I would consider trading him instead and get someone back with that $2.2M value.

I think McDavid signed for 17.6% of the cap at the time he signed. If Matthews drags this out into the off season and an 82 million dollar cap is projected, that equates to 14.3 million.

I think Matthews becomes the new highest paid player in the NHL.

I hadn't considered this so I just did the math.
McDavid took 15.7% of the cap ($12.5M with a salary cap @ $79.5)
So if Matthews takes the same percentage, he would make $12.9M not $14.3M (15.7 % of the estimated $82M salary cap).

It hardly relevant "what Nylander wants"....He's not a 7.5m player. McDavid got his big contract after winning the Hart. So got to assume that Matthews has to have that type of season to warrant so much money. Even Marner, he is entitled to being paid the 3rd highest RWer in the league.
Can't see DAR NHL ready at all.

I think people are over-hypothesizing the idea of hometown discounts to play in Toronto. Yes we all know Toronto is a meca for hockey and players at their levels are superstars, but you have to keep in mind that they are still very young people in their early 20s. If they can make 13 million instead of 10 million on another team, they are going to jump on that. They still have many great years ahead of them. Its not like they are 28-30 looking for a final contract.

When McDavid signed, it was before the cap went up. I actually might have done the math wrong. It was 75 and I calculated it at 73. Anyway, that's 16.667%. If we assume an increase to 82 million which I think is safe, that's 13.667. If Matthews scores 60 goals and adds 40 helpers, I think he can reasonably ask for 14.

I, personally, was doing hometown discount to stay with your current team. This thread happens to be in Toronto. I am the opposite of a Leafs fan so I was not implying that everyone wants to play in Toronto! If Sens had an owner that is willing to open his wallet, Cap Friendly would be so much more fun for me... I digress...

I also agree that players will not do $3M hometown discount (e.g. 13 million instead of 10 million). I was projecting the top 3 to take $500k discount each from my subjective player evaluation.
Also, all these players are RFAs with no salary arbitration, so unless another team offer sheets them, no one else is offering them $13M. The most these players can do is the same tactic that Nylander is currently doing. Sit out. :/

You can mention hometown discount when speaking of Tavares or Marner, but you do realize Matthews and Nylander aren't from Toronto?

Well if you are calculating the McDavid contract before the cap went up, then it's only fair to do the same for Matthews. 16.667% of 79.5 cap is 13.25M.
Dubas will need to make hard personnel decisions if Matthews asks for $14M...

See my above post. My definition of hometown discount is staying with your current team. Maybe there was a different term I should have used for that.

if they dont sign Matthews. someone will offer sheet him. your argument is he is #2 best player in the league. well if he is available teams will pounce.

Just to clarify, I said he's arguably the #2 player in the NHL. For this point, let's assume that he is the #2 player in the NHL. If the offer sheet is for $13M, and with each team's current rosters, I believe Carolina would be the only team in position to make that offer sheet. They would then lose 4 x #1 picks. It would be a big decision on them, especially since offer sheets are still pretty rare.

That being said, as a Sens fan, I truly hope someone offer sheets any of TO's players! I want it to be extremely difficult for them to keep their core =)

I would think the team in the best position actually is Arizona. Matthews hometown. they have all 4 first round pick required plus over the last 3-4 years they have stockpiled a ton of young prospects from taking on bad contracts.
They have the cap space. they have good young prospects so minimizes as best you can the loss of 4 first round picks. They get their own home town kid which would finally might be a draw to their games. They have a stable defense. is a team looking to turn the corner and be competitive.

also the 4 first is a big loss but are to a team they play twice a year.

Fair enough! I did try to do the Offer Sheet from Arizona perspective: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/894309
My evaluations might be wrong for Arizona RFAs that I signed (I don't see (m)any of their games) but I think they could make it work for 2019-2020.
However they do have contracts that are up in 2020-2021 that they will need to make hard decisions.
