Rangers w/ Staal + Girardi buy outs

Created by: thants
Team: 2016-17 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: May 2, 2016

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A basic Rangers roster with buy outs to Staal + Girardi as well as some signings to fill out the roster. Moves include:

Re-signing Kreider for $4.5m / 6-years. Covers both RFA and UFA years.

Re-signing Miller for $4m / 5-years. Covers mostly RFA years so maybe it makes more sense to extend it further or drop the price tag.

Re-sign Hayes for $2.2m / 2-years. Wasn't terribly impressed with him this year. However, this also helps spread out signings so that Hayes / Miller / Kreider don't become UFAs all at the same time.

Pavel Buchnevich signs an ELC worth max value ($925k) and likely with some performance bonuses built in. Choices are to go 3-year to lock him in cheap for the longest time or sign him 2-years so that he won't be able to go to arbitration for his second contract, keeping the cost of that one down.

Re-sign Stalberg for up to $1.25m / 2-years. I thought he was good on the 4th line. He could be replaced though.

Sign Brodziak at $1m / 1-year. Could be replaced with any number of 13th forward type players.

---

Buy out both Staal and Girardi. Immediate cap relief is $7.4m. Drops down to $6.4m / $5.4m / $4.4m cap relief over the next three seasons. Ends up being a cap hit of up to $2.6m from 2020-21 through 2025-26.

Re-signing Yandle for $6.25m / 6-years. He'll be 35 at the end of that so I wouldn't want to go much longer.

Sign Kostka at $800k / 1-year as a bottom pairing defenseman. Could be replaced with any number of options.

Sign Matt Irwin for $800k / 1-year as a 7th defenseman. Could be replaced by any number of options.

---

No changes to the goal tending.

---

Overall, this comes in around $71.6m so there's some space to play with since the cap is expected to end up around $74.0m-$74.5m.

I think this is a more realistic route than trading either Girardi or Staal although trading one or both of them would likely be a better option. Even retaining up to 50% salary a trade from a cap perspective is better. (Although such trades would make it a much tighter cap if you intend to re-sign Yandle.) Both have NMCs and low value right now so good luck.

This roster also creates opportunities to do things like trying to trade Nash or trying to trade for Shattenkirk or whatever it is people think we might do.

Very realistic. Do all staal brothers end up in Carolina then?

This team is excellent, however to be honest I would rather have Alex Goligoski than Yandle. While Yandle is undoubtedly one of the best passing defenseman in the NHL, his defense is severely lacking. Now this can be made up for if he is with a defensive stalwart like McLRath but it may not. Also Goligoski will be considerbly cheaper (approx 5.5 million) also will have championship experience from Pitt and now Dallas making a run. In addition, I drop Kreider down to 3rd line because Buchenevich is useless outside the top 6, I believe if he is in the bottom 6 he can turn into a Yakupov and eventually leave to Russia. He is our best asset in 10 years and we need to put him the greatest position to prosper while learning defense, him with Stepan makes the most sense.

Also, what about don't spend on Brodziak and Stalberg and pick up Dale Weise? Big, gritty, can score?

I prefer Yandle. I think he's better defensively than Goligoski is. Goligoski's rel. CA60 (relative Corsi against per 60 mins) was positive while Yandle's was negative in 5v5. Overall, they had similar rel. CF% numbers, which means that Goligoski provided a larger offensive jump for the Stars than Yandle did for the Rangers. Yandle is better defensively than a lot of people give him credit for. His errors are very obvious when they happen, but 98% of the time he's playing things right and just makes the play look pedestrian. But would I pass up Goligoski at $5.5m for 5 years? Nah. He's a good signing.

As for the playoff experience issue, Goligoski played 2 games in Pitt's SC run. He had a total of 20:44 TOI in that entire run. And right now Goligoski has 29 games of playoff experience to Yandle's 51. Keep in mind, Yandle went to the WCF from the Coyotes in 2012 and to the ECF with us last year.

If Kreider is going to be a third liner, then he needs to be moved instead of signed for $4.5m with term. But I do agree that having Buchnevich on the 3rd line doesn't make sense. I just had him there to list off what our depth chart looks like. Maybe this means moving Kreider/Miller so that the guy who is left plays on the second line with Buchnevich. Or maybe it means moving Nash although I think that would really weaken us on the wing.

Yeah, I'd be fine with him. He's certainly serviceable and would probably be fairly cheap.
