I chose yes, but I'm not sure yet...he had a very good last season. So, if he keeps his pace for at least 3/4 seasons, then it'll be a good contract. If he drops before, then Vegas will regret it. We'll see...

McPhee clearly investing, cause he thinks that this group of guys will return to the cup final every year. I dont think that will happen, and he’s definitely not worth 6M to me. McPhee handing out connys like candy canes

@CrustyPieMan I totally agree! The same unit can't keep up with the rest of the league's improvements and no team is underestimating Vegas anymore, so its likely that the Golden Knights will struggle this year. The money going around Vegas right now seems a little off. Every player their paying this season is from one good year's worth of effort.

This deal should have been in the Tuch range.

My issue with the signing is more about timing. To me it's not just that it's 1 good year. It's that the 1 good year was followed by a PED suspension. I mean Schmidt was a beast last year. His PLAYOFF ice time was 24+ min a game on the top line going against...well...playoff caliber teams. So his play/age/UFA status would warrant the money and term, BUT are you expecting him to stay on PEDs? Confident he wasn't on them during the playoffs or need them in the future? Just seems like they would be better off letting him prove it...or letting him go.

High risk low reward deal. Especially with the suspension. Vegas should’ve waited until the end of the season.

High paying long-term contracts for players who haven't played well for multiple years is getting a little silly. I hope GMs realize that the cap won't jump up every year like it did this season.

GM George McPhee has been spending like a drunken sailor the last few months. What happened to the savvy moves he made last season like the long term extension to Jonathan Marchessault? What's he gonna do w/ Karlsson after this season if he haves another huge year statistically? They're gonna be right up against the cap already. I hated the Theodore deal right from the start. He's overpaying players that he doesn't need to. Why did her have a "prove It" approach w/ Wild Bill, but have an open wallet w/ the other less proven players like Tuch, Theodore and Schmidt? It's amazing how the so called "5 year plan" turned into "win now at all costs."

They're definitely gonna need some of their 2017 and/or 2018 draft picks to take a couple roster spots next season. Otherwise, they'll never be under the cap.

McPhee is contradicting himself w/ these overly lucrative deals. He wouldn't offer Karlsson a long term big money deal, but he gives away the store to Tuch, Theodore, Pacioretty, Stasny, Fleury, and Schmidt. I don't get it. I understand why he had to pay the UFA's (Stasny and Pacioretty) big money, but he had a lot more leverage w/ the RFA's, and Fleury most certainly would have taken less. He rewarded these guys for last season's miraculous run, but we've all seen this backfire so many times in the past. You need to pay players for what they'll do in the future, not what they've done in the past. Look at the huge mess in DET as one example.

I'm sorry but I just simply cannot see a 6 Mill player in Nate Schmidt. A fine Top 4 Defender for sure. But 6 Million per year? I have my doubts.

8.8 Million Dollars on year one for a 2nd pairing defenseman! Is McPhee out of his mind?

Ok I feel the need to point something out here. One thing I will say to all of this, I do not think people are taking into account that Vegas is a brand new franchise, Lets take Cody Glass, the teams first draft pick, for example his ELC won't even start till next season and will run for 3 seasons, in 4 years Vegas will have plenty of space to sign him with the cap dumps they took from teams coming off the books. What I am saying is Vegas does not have to worry about cap space to sign their own draft picks yet, so they can be more aggressive signing their own guys, and what the hell are they gonna spend their money on anyway? Have you guys seen the defensemen class next year, its very barren now, Schmidt likely would have commanded something similar on the open market. Again its either extensions like this or overpay for free agents. If you don't the money is just gonna sit there. In a vacuum this signing is bad but I would rather keep the band together and bet on my own guys.

Schmidt took Vegas to the cup finals playing top pairing minutes with ENGELLAND and mcnabb. He’s able to play right and left side and has a lot of skill and speed. Last two seasons he’s been very impressive and I honestly have no clue why anyone would vote no on this. He would easily be a top rhd on 85% of nhl teams and a top lhd of 70% of nhl teams. Box score hero’s will hate this bc he isn’t a 65 point guy but what he brings on and off the ice is unmeasurable

I guess GMGM didn't factor in how much it would affect Schmidt now that he isn't using steroids
