Gives them an all-star and a top level prospect on the back end. They then have room to sign Nylander. I did say add picks as needed.

Certainly wouldn’t make this trade, but it would be at least 2-3 unprotected first rounders.

Auston Matthews is a great talent. I think they would be able to sign him, but does he want to go back to ARI? This would have them solidifying their D to maybe give the fans a cup that they deserve. I didn't say there would not be any picks. I am not saying make a trade for Dan Girardi, OEL is one of the overshadowed best D in the NHL.

I guess if he wants to go back to ARI why not just not resign with TOR?

I don't see it happening, but in the category of "what if's"

What if Matthews gets to RFA and ARI offers 7X15 (or whatever the max is) Toronto wouldn't be able to match. Sure they would walk away with (4) 1sts, but They would also have Matthews which would make them a playoff contender (especially if they weren't giving up Keller or OEL)

Frankly, I wouldn't make this trade if Clayton Keller were included, but let's put value aside for the moment. OEK is on an expiring contract, as are Marner and, less important, Kapanen and Johnsson, not to mention others that might come up from the Marlies next year. You just paid Nylander $8.25M, which (perhaps not coincidentally) is 10% of the anticipated cap for next year. Even assuming you're going to let Gardiner and Hainsey walk, how are you going to pay everyone?

Gee, this so bad for the Leafs. First overpaying Nylander by about 2m. Leafs certainly don't need two LHD. Time will tell but IMO. 8.5m was overpayment for OEL and on his contract that takes him to age 35. Next year OEL is going to be the four highest Dman in the league. Tell me how is that good?
