i think the kings will ask for marner. i mean u can say whatever u want about doughtys contract and age, but at the end of the day u r getting a norris caliber dman. doughty would be a godsend to the leafs. pretty sure you'll win a cup within the next 2 seasons if u have him on the backend

Who cares what the Kings ask for, decline before they finish saying Doughty.

Now don't get me wrong, I think he's the best defenseman in the league. However, he's 29 turning 30 only a few months into the start of an 8 year 11 million dollar contract. Doughty may not be worth 11 million now let alone when he's 32 or (Cough) when he's 37. The Leafs have a very manageable long term outlook on their cap situation, adding an aging player on a mega huge contract at the cost of a 1st round pick, a servicable r handed defenceman and a 22 year elite offensive player is just stupid.

It would help the Leafs this year but don't know how they fit all those guys into the cap next year. Another good player would have to go next year for cap reasons. Don't think the guys do the deal either.....though the seems to be stuck in mediocrity even with Doughty and Kopitar.

He would be great! If you didn't have to over pay massively to get him and then watch Kapanen and other leave because the Leafs would truly be in cap hell.

Not that I’m in favour of this trade especially with the way he played against us (not that he isn’t a great Dman) but do the leafs really need another 11m contract?

As far as cap goes, you give up nylander and zaitsev and realistically we move out 11.25m in contracts. Giving up an extra roster spot would set us back about 500k I don’t think that is an impossible situation.

Due to the fact this is saying rebuild I think nylander and zaitsev with a first is a package they may consider, may have to give up an extra prospect.

I don't have any appetite for this trade. And I would wager Dubas would be the same way, he has mentioned a million times how he won't make moves that damage the future and this would definitely fall in that category.

I agree 100%... i’ve Never been in favour of these big money long term contracts for players in their 30’s. I think the real value in a player is the elc and 2nd contract (3rd if there is a short bridge deal) this is a great position to get the most bang for your buck and possibly move them for futures. 8 year contract on a 30yr old is risky. I doubt someone who plays as physical and fast as doughty is worth 11m at 38.

While I will comment this is a decent trade value wise, I'd have to agree in saying Doughty isn't in Toronto's best interest long term.

really good players can usually play well into their 30s. 33-34 is usually when I'd expect to start seeing the down fall.
Just look at Malkin. He's 32 and he's averaging 2 points per game highest PPG average in the league. He' probably play well into his mid 30s.
I think you'd get atleast 5 years out of Doughty if you could resign him.

Umm.....not sure if you noticed this, but Doughty is signed for the next 9 years. This year at a cost of 7 million and then the next 8 years at 11 million dollars a year. He will turn 30, 3 months into his new contract. Meaning by your estimations will be a 11 million dollar declining asset for half of his 11 million dollar contract.

nah there will only be what 2 years past 34. Kind of the nice thing about defense man is they aren't forwards. They don't have to have all that speed. Forwards play a 200 foot game, defense is more a 160 foot game. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. Chara is still playing at 41. Got to get that wise old man skill out there. I don't really see a huge issue with it. They can always dump him off as a cap casualty later in the contract..

11 million dollars a year isn't a cap dump that is easy to remove from the books. Also you want speed everywhere in the lineup. All the best defenceman in the NHL are currently under 33 years old (I was going to say under 30 but there are a couple of outliers). Most of the best are under 30 and they all are above average skaters. Lose a step and you are dust in this league. (Unless you are 6'9" and can reach 15 feet in any direction with the wave of a stick, but Chara can get crushed by speed, he just doesn't have any of it anymore)

the pens won a cup with Dumo and Hainsey as their top 2 defense men. Neither is particularly fast.
Lets also note that Maatta was the second line pairing and he's slow as hell.

Now if you are done with imaginary hockey, we can get back to reality. You don't need McDavid speed to play defense. That's just a fact. There are plenty of good defensemen over the age of 30. And 2 years on that contract isn't all that bad, considering he may be playing well then. There is always a rebuilding team willing to take a cap dump if the price is right. Fact is getting 5-6 good years out of a top defense man isn't a bad deal. Especially as the cap goes up every year.
