Well the OP"s whole premise is based on the Flames GM being "desperate" and "making a bad decision".
He's not desperate, we just finished year #3 of a complete tear down and rebuild. Bennett is going to be a cornerstone of the Flames future, and I would bet my house that Treliving is not going to trade him for an aging goaltender. If that's the asking price for, we keep Bennett (and Brodie, and Hamilton, and Gaudreau, and Monahan for that matter) and find another goalie somehow, or wait it out until the market for goaltenders gets even softer.
It's supply and demand. There is going to be way more goaltenders on the market than there will be teams that need them, thanks to expansion. The Penguins are going to be in a really tough spot because of this. Fleury has a No-Move Clause, which means he has to be protected by the Penguins in an expansion draft. You can only protect one goalie so the Pens will have to expose Murray unless they can trade MAF. That won't be easy because MAF also has a limited No-Trade Clause and there is only really 3 or so teams that will be actively looking for a goalie (Calgary, Toronto and Carolina) and way more teams looking to unload one because they have two and can only protect one. Some of those teams:
STL - Allen/Elliot
TBL - Bishop/Vasilevskiy
PHI - Mason /Neuvirth
ANA - Gibson / Andersen
COL - Varlamov/Pickard
CLB - Bobrovsky/Korpisalo
MIN - Dubnyk/Kuemper
Not to mention Howard is likely going to be available, rumors are out there that the Isles want to move Halak to save cap because Greiss has been good as the starter.
There are upcoming UFA's like Reimer, Enroth and Ward.
Pens will not be dealing Fleury from a position of strength, so Pens fans should temper their expectations on any trade return he might fetch, and I certainly wouldn't be hoping for a "Sam Bennett" if I were you guys.
