Why is everyone acting like this is bad for Edmonton? I don't like it for the Rangers. They're playing at about the same level this year but Spooner's been better the last few years.

I don't get everyone making comments about how Chiarelli is so bad because of THIS trade.
Eberle for Strome is worse than Eberle for Spooner. Obviously neither player is as good as Eberle but that trade is over and done with.
Strome for Spooner at the same salary is a GOOD trade for EDM.

I think Strome still has the better upside, but Spooner could help EDM more immediately. Not as lopsided as I initially thought. Don't know why NY would retain 900k though without getting a draft pick back at least. They have over $5 mil in dead cap with Girardi's buyout, Spooner's retained salary and Beleskey in the minors.

I’m struggling to see why people are bashing Chiarelli for this, other than simply because it’s Chiarelli. Both players have really been equally disappointing for their teams this year. It’s a change of scenery trade, plain and simple.

I actually think Spooner has a little more upside than Strome here. But either way it’s fair

If Spooner played half of what he's getting paid he'd still be in NYC. 2 points in 16 games after scoring 16 points in 20 games as a Ranger last season. This is one overpaid Winger for another.

I agree it's of change of scenery type move, but Spooner just got a change of scenery at last year's deadline. Strome has been an underachiever his entire career. I think this move will actually benefit EDM, especially if Spooner can jump into the top six.

And don't forget about Brendan Smith's $4.35M AAV. He's on the roster now but he could easily be sent back down to Hartford where he spent part of last season. That would make almost $10M in "dead cap."

I agree, but Chiarelli has made so many bad moves since becoming GM of EDM. The Lucic signing will haunt this team for years to come. They'll recover though. Talbot is a pending UFA and they'll have the extra cap space to pursue another Goalie or Defenseman next summer.

Just imagine where EDM would be right now w/ Hall and Eberle up front instead of Spooner and Lucic. They could've left Lucic to be signed by another foolish GM to be under the cap. How Chiarelli still has a job is a huge mystery to me. But he'll buy himself another season when he fires McLellan.

Yep, I was going to iterate this. While this trade is mostly a toss-up, the broader context definitely favours...anyone but Edmonton.

The Reinhart deal (in which they lost what was eventually the Matt Barzal pick) closely dovetales with this too. I shudder to think what Edmonton could look like with Eberle, Hall and Barzal to play with McDavid, Nugent-Hopkins & Draisaitl. That would be hands down the best Top-6 in the NHL (maybe of all time). and that’s not even considering the sunk costs of a 1st overall Nail Yakupov. Grab Reilly or Dumba or Lindholm for the back end. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but Chiarelli has really made a mess of things in Edmonton.

Fair Point.

But also Barzal for Reinhart.

So Hall + Barzal + Eberle for Larsson + Spooner.

There's a reason why the Bruins were so easily moved off on Spooner and it didn't take the Rangers long to figure it out. Spooner is lazy and doesn't like to put an extra work in. The Bruins were very vocal with this point. Spooner played for his contract and got it. Now he will just cruise for a couple of seasons.

I give Spooner 3 more years in the NHL before he's done. He'll finish out this contract, someone will take a gamble on him for a year and when he still doesn't pan out, that'll be it for him. Like I said when Boston traded him, he's a good 3rd line wing/PP specialist that doesn't know what the defensive zone is. He's a streaky winger that will look like a P/GP player and then go ice cold for a quarter of the season.

Everyone's just assuming this trade will backfire for EDM b/c just about every move Chiarelli has made basically since the Seguin for Ericsson trade has worked out better for the other team. This is just like the Bergevin moves: Everyone assumed Galchenyuk for Domi was a bad move. Now, not so much. Basically, if a GM makes a couple terrible deals it takes a very long time for the fans to trust him again. Unfortunately for Peter Chiarelli, he's made about 5 big impact moves over the last 5 years...And all have failed.

Spooner has not impressed me in any way so far. I think he has had only 1 dangerous shot. He plays a very soft game in all zones and even though he appears fast, he has done squat with his speed.

Strome had a lot more value on this roster as the 3rd line C. Hitch has been double-shifting McDavid on the 1st & 4th line because they don't have anyone left that can effectively play C on that line.

Maybe he catches fire at some point, but I can't even see a spark out of him. He is by far the worst player on the roster from what I've seen.

A little over a month later and EDM is already trying to move him. Not just move him but throw him into deals just to get rid of him. I still laugh at the people who thought this guy was some steal when Boston traded him.
