Kadri for D

Created by: TML1991
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 20, 2018
Published: Nov. 21, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kadri is a more suitable trade chip for deals involving players like manson/ekholm/tanev/faulk/spurgeon/martinez/muzzin or any of the other dmen being thrown about by the MSM that are 26+ . Similar age/skill levels/cap hit/ and control.

ekholm / kadri trade is just a placeholder for a potential trade, but i think that's the type of return that is fair for both sides, not a 60+ point 22 year old.

AM/WN/MM for a combined 30 mil is probably the WORST case scenario for the leafs. If I'm off by a million or so it's likely under the numbers I have, roll with it, it's a worst case scenario after all.

ideally, you move the marleau contract and you could just resign gardiner, and keep kadri, but this is a better alternative than trading nylander.

I don't think Nashville makes that trade. They have Johansen and Turris locked in. They aren't trading someone as valuable as Ekholm for a 3C.

I think a team in need of a 2C is more likely to move for Kadri. Maybe Carolina, Dallas, Colorado etc.

I don't disagree with the trade, but Leafs better get those RFA signings under control and go with a 23 man roster.

And then Toronto has to address its center depth. I wouldn't do that. If Nylander plays center in the NHL, I believe it would be a waste of 8M to put him on the third line.

I think Kadri wold slot ahead of turgid but you would still be left with the same issue. But really being deep at centre isn’t a bad problem.

I just can’t invision Toronto moving Kadri. Home town kid that plays on the edge and puts up 30 goals a year on a budget contract is exactly what the leafs need to hold in to.

Agreed, especially that nylander deal. If marner takes 10m you know he’s damn well worth it. I don’t see him fleecing the leafs. So yeah mathews comes back and continues to tear up the league and make it look like nhl 19 on rookie mode and gets 12m... great.... marner puts up 110 points and gets 10m, super. Nylander puts up 60 points and gets 8m... I don’t think so.

Fair i think ekholm is the most valuable dman in the group, so it's obviously the most aggressive trade, but kadri is not a 3C. He's at worst a 2C on any team in the league except the leafs, pens, caps, and maybe lightning/oilers, but they would shift stamkos or draisaitl to the wing.

I think this offseason brings a lot of "what ifs" to the table, especially with Matthews and Marner needing new deals. Ideally, Kadri is the odd-man out if the Leafs are looking to improve in other areas, but I guess it depends what they can get back. It's a shame Suzuki was traded from Vegas to Montreal, because I could see Vegas (pre-Statsny) needing a player like Kadri and Suzuki, though he still needs more time, would be a good look at a future 3C and potentially higher. Something like Suzuki and Miller for Kadri may have worked, but that's out of the question now. Maybe Kadri to the Devils, perhaps along with something else, for Severson and McLeod? Hard to say, but I don't think the Predators make this deal, and I am not sure the Leafs bite either.

yeah that's why i said those RFA signings are an absolute worst case scenario, anything less than what I have posted is a bonus to the leafs. Let's you keep a brown, or add some depth to get to a 23 man roster.

Just trying to prove it's not that hard to keep the big 4 forwards together. Leafs have other options than trading nylander, that make more sense for extending the window.

he was just signed to a long term contract at 6 million AAV. Whether or not I do, Nashville does.

I think Kadri, particularly at his salary is incredibly valuable and wouldn't move him either. My point was that teams without a 2C would be more likely to make a move for him.

Nashville is paying Johansen and Turris 14 million a year and have 5 other guys who can play center. I don't think they would be the team to trade for Kadri.

Paying him 6 million doesn't mean he is more valuable than Kadri, especially since Kadri is on a extremely good contract. Either way I am not a fan of this trade, I think centre depth is the most important thing a team needs and TO arguably has the best in the league (Not sure that can be argued at this point, Pittsburgh was the only team who could and Brassard just isn't what he used to be.)

At his salary he is not an odd man out. If Matthews is locked up long term, they are set through Kadri's contract to have the deepest centers in the league. It would be if Pittsburgh had locked down jordan staal to a cheap deal before he was traded.

My god, leafs fans are so sensitive sometimes. Nashville has 2 top 6 centers so they wouldn't trade someone as valuable as Ekholm for another center. I then provided a list of teams that might. You guys are like children sometimes.

Jesus Christ, I stated my opinion about Nashville and then provided a list of 3 other teams that might pull the trigger. I then complimented Kadri in like 5 posts. You guys are so touchy.

As I've said twice now. I made my point and in doing so apparently desecrated the Kadri family name by suggesting Nashville might consider themselves set at Center and have simply been defending myself since.

Ummmm, what? Not sure where I was being sensitive, and this seems like an incredibly emotional response to someone raising a counter point to your point. I don't want to be insensitive about this though, so I guess I apologize for offering a counter point?

I've got like 5 people on here, all leafs fans, who ignored everything about what I said other than suggesting that Nashville was set at 1 and 2 C. Its like I insulted Kadri's mother or something. I even provided a list of teams who might want him and then stated in multiple posts that hes incredibly valuable and I wouldn't trade him.

Its as if I don't proclaim every leaf to be the best ever, with no possible alternative that you all descend upon people to yell at them.

It's an interesting proposal. As far as the Nashville proposal it's hard to say. I don't think Bonino is a strong enough 3C and having Kadri would certainly make us stronger down the center. Whoever you call the 2C (Turris/Kadri) is irrelevant. Pushing Bonino down to the fourth line and running a fourth line with Watson/Bonino/Sissons would give us a really solid 4th line. Tolvanen needs a playmaker so bring him up to play with Turris and Smith and have Fiala run with Kadri and Hartman and you've got a really solid top 9. The defense would struggle some but once Subban gets back a top 4 of Josi/Subban/Hamhuis/Ellis is still really strong. Bring up Donovan from MIL or trade for a depth LHD and they'll be fine.

From Toronto's perspective, i think they'd be better off keeping Kadri's contract b/c you aren't going to replace him for any cheaper than his contract.

Perhaps, at least 1 of those people didn't read any of the other posts but just the one that he was quoted in? I do know that some fans (from all teams) do get way too invested in the players they like. I try not to be one of those guys, I try to fairly value each player based on their individual talents and skills. I find that is the best way to be fair and objective.

To reiterate. I think a team without a 2C would be more inclined to do a top D for Kadri trade. Such as Carolina, Dallas, Colorado etc.

Unless its a stud, I wouldn't trade Kadri. While he is a luxury at 3C, he is not an expensive one. He can move up to 2C if there is an injury and he can take tough defensive assignments as a 3C.

You might say "thats why another team should trade for him" well, he is valuable to Toronto because they already have him. To give something up for that luxury is where the problem lies.

I agree completely and I'd even go further (Which is likely my bias) and say it has to be an absolute insanely good deal for me to even consider moving him. I am a firm believer that having centre depth is the best thing to have. They control so much of the ice and impact the game way more than wingers. They also are vastly important in team defence. Having depth on D is also important but centre depth allows them to not have to defend the slot as much which helps the defence even more.

These people who are making major trades for Toronto are people that play video games and watch TV, they don't play the sport or understand how its played, which is why you see so many massive deals that just won't ever happen. Minor moves to upgrade small holes are the path to success, big trades affect the teams chemistry and often do more harm than good.

Cheers sir, have a great day.

Yeah let's trade the team-frendliest contract on the roster. What a genius.
