You're not going to get the Kings to retain that much salary. They're already in a cap crunch and Doughty's extension kicks in next year.

I like the idea on paper, but within three years, it's a loss on the ice.

They can trade plenty of younger, cheaper guys at full price, if their cap space is an issue. Washington has none, and Burakovsky, at 23, is fair value for Kovalchuk at 35, if and only if the dollars balance.

They could, however they already have several players on the books that aren't playing for the team, and won't want to have in excess of $5M in dead space on the cap.

The Kings might retain $1M or so of Kovalchuk's contract, and agree to take back a contract or two to make the numbers work, but they're not going to retain that much salary.

If retaining half the contract is what it takes to get the deal done, then he's not gonna get traded to Washington.

Okay. Kovalchuk has three more even strength points than Burakovsky, so far this year. 8 to 5. Washington has no cap space. Kovalchuk's contact is not a good fit, and their power play is fine as is.

I mean, the Caps just traded away a future starting goalie to get out of paying a guy 5M at 38.

Max offer is Burakovsky and Mitchell for Kovalchuk at 50% retention. That's definitely a loss in the third year, but maybe a tiny improvement this season.

You're missing the point. If Kovalchuk doesn't work out in LA, then the desired result is to get his contract off the books in its entirety to make room for other pieces. The Kings would be willing to take less of a return to not have any of his contract count against the cap. I'm not saying that the Kings would want more out of the Caps, I'm saying they'd look for a trade partner that wouldn't need the Kings to retain so much salary.

The only way Kovalchuk comes to Washington (from Washington's side) is if Ovechkin wants him on the team (see: Crosby/Jack Johnson).

The deal above is certainly not massive overpay though. Burakovsky's value has been discussed ad nauseum, but it is not as high as some would like. Mitchell is basically a waste of a contract spot, but he is a FA so LA can just let him sail off into the darkness. Fehervary isn't even a B-level prospect, probably a better chance that he never crosses the pond vs makes an impact in the NHL. The 2nd, true value of a pick around #60? Not so much.

If anything, this is underpayment for Kovalchuk with #3.1M retained. Kovalchuk with no retention, deal. Kovalchuk with that retention... LA probably hard passes.
