Burakovsky has five even strength points this year (playing with a weak 3C, Lars Eller), is 23, plays on a checking line, and will be an RFA in the summer.
Kovalchuk has eight even strenth points this year (playing with a great 2C, Jeff Carter), is 35, gets only 6 minutes a night if the Kings are holding a lead, and is in year one of a three year, eighteen million dollar contract.

LA would love this trade, but the pick and the extra player are going the wrong way. Plus LA would need to retain 50%.

LA would take that and run. That's an extreme overpayment for Kovey.

Did you just call Lars Eller a weak 3C? Shame. The dude was a solid 2C for half the playoffs and is one of the best 3Cs in the league. Go rethink that

Yes. In the playoffs Eller was a solid 2C, giving Washington the depth to surpass three line teams like Pittsburgh and Vegas. This year his even strength points per sixty are barely top ninety (edit: among listed centers, some of whom play wing, so maybe he's really playing like a solid 3C). Same Cup hangover as Burakovsky, but nobody's mentioned it, and that's fine. I'm not upset about it. But if we're looking at Burakovsky's points this year, Eller is part of the situation, whether as chicken or as egg. They were 5th and 6th in points in the Finals, and each has top line potential, but so far this year they're playing like bottom six guys, and that's fine. I'm patient enough to want to hold onto both and let them develop into at least a solid second line together. Eller's getting some power play time and putting his offense together and I'm sure he'll only improve.

Ahhhh what? You are suggesting Burakovsky for Kovalchuk @50% ($3.125M for 3 years) + an extra player + a pick (which was a 1st in the trade suggested). For Burakovsky? "Next stop: Bonkerstown!"

Disagreement equals mental illness? I never thought about it like that, but I was feeling a little sick today...

No, it doesn't have to be a first round pick. Maybe a 3rd. (Edit: Plus Campbell)

Kovalchuk led the Khl in points last year, has eight even strength points this year playing with Carter, and is 35. Burakovsky came in sixth in points in the Stanley Cup Finals, has five even strength points this year playing with Eller, and is 23.
