Nylander for Guentzel Rust and a 1st

Created by: Chigurrhh
Team: 2018-19 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 1, 2018
Published: Dec. 1, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Leafs don't want to pay 7 million+ to Nylander, Guentzel could be a better option. He will likely be getting 5-6 million next year. Rust makes the cap work and can be traded if Leafs don't want him or need more cap space later on.

For the Pens, at 7.2 million, they would be spending less on Nylander than they would be on Guentzel+Rust long term. Personally, I would rather have Nylander.

Additional cap moves necessary to accommodate Schultz's return in a few months.

Unlikely to happens as this would be a trade to another playoff contender. And the Penguins seem to like Guentzel.

He's absolutely good in the playoffs, almost a point per game. But a lot of that is simply a result of Crosby stepping up his game in the playoffs. Crosby would do even better with an overall better/more creative winger. Look at what Crosby did with Hossa.

So a overpaid bottom 6 player, a player who has mediocre numbers away from Sid (sheary ring a bell) and what would be a late 1st for Nylander? Leafs decline easily

I think playoff Guentzel>>>>>>>>playoff Nylander. Adding a first and a speedy fourth liner definitely makes it good value but I think Toronto probably is a bit careful of potentially giving Pittsburgh another generational right wing. Maybe add in Schultz for Hainsey and they come around.

I would never do this ..... Trading away 2 great playoff players for Nylander who disappeared in playoffs. I wouldnt give 59 strait up for a soft RWer.

Why bag on Gunetzels numbers away from Sid? That accounts for when he was a rookie first breaking into the league, when he was being used as a center or flanking Sheahan last season, or the handful of games Sid missed this season. Next to Sid he's a Top-20 left winger in the NHL, why trade that for yet another right winger and make the logjam even worse?

Oh and as for Sheary he was on a 40 point pace in Buffalo before getting hurt. He certainly isn't the player he looked like at his absolute best next to Sid, but he's no waste of space.

I call Bull. Nylander has OPed Stats on the assists. 20 Goals isn't worth that much. Nylander is nothing special NOTHING. Why would Pittsburgh overpay for a guy who they are trying to advertise like a Car Salesman because he isn't that good people just want to get more than he is worth, and this is worse than most I have seen he isn't worth it. Guentzel scored just as many goals as Nylander did last year. Only difference is Nylander gets stat boosted because of the players on the team just a known fact bro. When he is averaging 21 Goals in his 2 seasons and is wanting more than Drew Doughty in money he isn't ever going to be worth it.

Nylander scored at a better rate on a tanking leafs team in 2016 than Guentzal ever has away from sid.

Doubling down on being wrong now eh? Willy at 21 is better than Guentzal could ever hope to be.

While I do agree that Nylander is better, he's not that much better. After all Guentzel is only a year and a half older than him and currently on pace for 68 points, whereas Nylander has consistently put up 60 under differing situations. Yes he put up big numbers during a tank year under zero stress to win as a 20 year old, color me unimpressed. Last year was big for him, and (regardless of the team bump) nearly cracking 50 even strength points speaks for itself.

That being said, Guentzel has done more than 80% of his career scoring at evens, including a rookie campaign that saw him pot 30 even strength points in 40 games and the current season where he has 18 ES points in 24 games. Even modest regression gives you a 50-60 point winger that meshes perfectly with one of the most complicated centers to outfit. Now why would the Pens give that up for the potential that Nylander brings an extra 10 points a season at evens and can outperform what Kessel or Hornqvist bring on the man advantage?
