The Leafs should do what WSH did to Orpik with Marleau

Description
Here's what I would do if I were Dubas:

Last offseason Washington traded Grubauer along with Orpik to Colorado for a 2nd round pick. Colorado bought out Orpik only for him to re-sign with Washington for a significantly lower cap hit. That's what I would do with Marleau, trade him to a team like Vancouver (who will have a lot of space next year) along with a decent pick in exchange for a worse pick for them to buy him out. He's only owed $4.25M in salary next year so if the Laafs re-signed him to that amount, that would be his cap hit on a 1 year deal saving them $2M in space.

These are mainly worst-case scenario for contracts and I didn't change term (except for Marner and Matthews) since this was more to see the cap hit for this year.

The league was pissed off the first time, but let it slip. I seriously doubt this wouldn't have consequences if we did it.

Because he comes back? He isn't actually leaving.

For all the people saying the NHL won't allow it, why? If it was against the CBA they wouldn't let Washington do it, they might not like teams doing it but they can't stop them. TBH i love this idea a lot, I would sign him for way less than 4.25, but the idea is a great realistic way to get under that contract

The NHL sent a memo around after Orpik that they were pissed off and not to do it again. They consider it cap circumvention, which they can punish at their discretion.

That's so dumb, if they let one team do it they should let all teams do it. If they don't like it they should have a clear rule saying it is cap circumvention or not allow Washington to resign him.

I think because it is not technically against the CBA, they couldn't prevent the signing without the NHLPA getting all pissy, which is why they let it go through. If it happens again I expect it to be like the mega contracts that get cap recapture penalties added to them.

This idea was already mentioned a couple months ago. Basically Marleau agrees to move his NMC on July 1 after Toronto pays his signing bonus, and Dubas has a handshake agreement with whatever team he trades Marleau + whatever other assets to, then Leafs sign him for cheap when he's a free agent. That way the team getting him just takes on the high cap hit and barely pays him anything and they get a young asset in return. The league might not have liked it the first time, but there's legally nothing they can do about it until the CBA expires. It's a loop-hole that a team found, until the CBA is renegotiated and states that it's illegal, the NHL can't do anything about it.
