Description
Expected Cap Increase: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl-projects-83m-salary-cap-2019-20-season/sn-amp/

Explanation: Marner and Matthews signed to max terms deal. Leafs could potentially save some money on 5 year deals but I'm guessing around a 2m cap hit both combined. Kapanen and Johansson are signed to 2 year bridge deals. My guess of a combined cap hit for both at around 4.5-5. Leafs acquire Tanev as a cheap top 2 RHD option at the 2019 draft, which means we Babcock's favourite leaves with a 3rd. More could be involved if VAN eat some cap. Marleau gets traded after July 1st where he only has a base salary left of 1.25m. He can either play somewhere else or retire and some team such as Arizona just takes on the cap for the year that can help them save some money getting to the cap floor. A cheap depth D comes back and we give them a 2nd as a thank you gift. Dermott gets a top 4 role which he deserves, no way we can keep Gardiner. Reilly has a a familiar partner in Tanev (WHC where they had success together) and we keep three elite forward duos (Matthews/Nylander, Tavares/Marner, Kadri/Kapanen). This opens up our cup window for about three years before the extensions for Kadri, Reilly and Anderson become the issue, but we all know alot can change by then.

Just can't resist trading a NMC Marleau who is trying to win a Cup in his last NHL season.

Marleau does not wave to go to the desert. So no magic fix. Nice try but not really a fix just a dream.

Leafs pay him 3 million to stay home with his family and waive his deal, and not be a burden due to cap constraints. Works for all parties. Can be done without his deal but looks better with it.

Agreed, the only way Marleau ends up in the desert is if he retires & Leafs trade his empty cap hit there

????? Marleau doesn't care about the Leafs cap restraints. He does care about winning a Cup in his last NHL season. We see hockey players all the the time, guys who made 10 of millions of dollars coming back on PTO contract or even playing in the AHL or Europe...because they play until they can't.
