Should COL leave out Makar until next year

Created by: UpsideDownQue

Description
With Seattle entering the league in 21-22, and the expansion draft rules being the same (All players who have accrued two or less professional seasons at the end of the 2020-21 season, as well as all unsigned draft choices appearing on the teams reserve list, will be exempt from the upcoming expansion draft), the question is:

Should COL wait until next season to bring Makar up to the NHL? He would then be exempt from the draft as he would only have 2 NHL seasons under his belt before the expansion draft.

I think Makar is NHL ready right now, but I think its worth it to delay his NHL debut until 19-20 to allow COL to protect an extra player. Assuming they take the 7/3/1 approach, this is who I think they would protect:

F (7):
MacKinnon
Rantanen
Landeskog (assuming he signs an extension before the draft)
Kerfoot
Jost
Compher
Kamenev

D (3):
Johnson (NMC)
Girard
Barrie (if he resigns) or Zadorov

G (1):
Grubauer

With this protection list, Makar, Timmins, Kaut, Bowers, and any players drafted after 2018 (Jack Hughes?) will be exempt as long as they do not play in the NHL in the 18-19 season. (they may play in the NHL beginning in 19-20 as they will be able to play in 19-20 and 20-21 and still be a second year pro and therefore exempt at the time of the draft).

This is a really interesting question. I don’t think Kaut or Timmins will debut until next season, but the assumption with Makar has been that he will join the Avalanche this spring after the UMass season is over. I think the decision to bring in Makar will depend on Colorado’s playoff positioning. If they’re out (whether they don’t qualify or get knocked out) by the time Makar is finishing his season, then of course there’s no point in bringing him in. If they’re in a place to make a serious run, and they feel that Makar would be a significant upgrade over Nemeth & Barberio, then I think it’s worth bringing him in. One other factor to consider is that Erik Johnson will be 33 years old with two years left at $6M going into the expansion draft. It’s hard to predict now, but he could be a candidate to waiver his NMC and not have to worry about being selected, depending on where his game is at that time.

Interesting point. Johnson is a good player and leader on the team but would Seattle want to take on that contract with an aging player? Could be a good way for Avs to get out of that contract though. I think if Avs are in good playoff position and Joe believes Makar is ready, he'll bring him in. I wouldn't be surprised if the Avs made a deal with Seattle to protect another player.
